The most frequent request that we receive here at The Judgment of Paris is for us to include fuller-figured models in our discussions.

Alas, to borrow a phrase, "one goes to war with the army that one has." The simple fact is that it is very difficult to find quality images of larger models.

The signing of the gorgeous Megan Garcia by Wilhelmina is a cause for hope, to be sure, but one still wishes that more work featuring fuller-figured girls was available.

One of the few sources of images of larger models is the "Plush Cat" project (www.plushcatclub.com), run by a West Coast photographer named Satu. This operation has been producing an annual calendar of plus-size models for many years. The images tend to be a bit racier than we generally discuss on the site, but Satu does cast truly full-figured models, and her most recent calendar, 2008, includes an image of a girl whose work deserves notice.

* * *

Long-time readers of the site may remember our singling out for praise the following test image of gorgeous model Tiffany Kaelin. It is quite simply one of the most gorgeous photographs of a plus-size model ever taken, surpassing even most tests by agency-represented girls. The feminine top frames the model's buxom curves, and the slit sleeves offer a sensual glimpse of her soft, full arms. The necklace is an attractive accessry, and the romantic hairstyle enhances the model's femininity still further. Add to that the lush natural setting, and the image is well-nigh perfect.

In the intervening seasons since that test photo was taken, Tiffany's beauty has become much more opulent, and her appearance in the 2008 Plush Cat calendar is nothing short of breathtaking, offering a rare example of an image of a genuinely curvaceous model that is extremely alluring, yet not over-the-top, and that acknowledges and even celebrates the sumptuous fullness of the model's figure.

Observe how the fitted garment defines the model's contours, testifying even to the roundness of her forearms. Her decolletage is daringly presented, balanced by the glimpse of the model in reverse view. The open neckline shows that her clavicle is submerged in soft fullness (an intensely sensual detail), and the necklace compliments the opulent richness of the model's well-fed figure. Her long tresses flow softly over her shoulders. The expression is an alluring gaze of vulnerability and of want. The pose is expertly chosen: the way in which Tiffany leans heavily against the car suggests the intoxicating weight of her figure.

(You may click on the image to view it at a larger size.)

The Plush Cat site also offers a few outtakes of Tiffany, the most attractive of which is this picture, in which the model displays a come-hither glance.

Here is another, more traditional image--but note that the final choice for the calendar picture was much more effective.

Satu also provides two somewhat more conservative picture of Tiffany, and the model appropriately adopts a more casual smile in these pictures.

The lacy bustier still adds a touch of sensuality.

It is a great pity that fuller-figured models are still so rare in the plus-size industry. Models like Tiffany prove that they can show off clothing every bit as persuasively as their less richly-endowed peers. One must applaud Satu and her Plush Cat project for featuring larger plus-size models--and Torrid, of course, for at least transgressing the exceeding narrow strictures of most full-figure fashion retailers.

* * *

Anyone who is interested can obtain Plush Cat calendars from the past several years at the project's Web site.
- Click here to visit Plush Cat Club

I'm not as keen on the other images in the Plush Cat calendar, but Tiffany's picture is gorgeous, and kudos to the photographer for drawing a line in the sand and casting curvier girls.

Tiffany really is a lovely model, and it's a shame that there aren't more retailers featuring models her size. There should be.

Also, the first test picture in the post is absolutely stunning - natural beauty epitomized. A calendar featuring images like that, now that would be amazing.

This topic brought to mind a clip that I saw on the Canadian TV series Dragon's Den. The premise of the program is that budding entrepreneurs approach five of Canada's top CEOs with a business proposition, and then those five - the "dragons" - decide whether or not the proposal represents a good investment.

In this clip, a Halifax woman named Cora Rogers submits her proposal for a plus-size lingerie chain. The voice-over commentary is annoying and patronizing, as are some of the comments from the "dragons," and the editing is a bit disjointed, but I'm mostly posting this because of Cora's attractive wardrobe:

Notice that she's wearing a cute Torrid-like top, terrific accessories, and has a great hairstyle. She really looks put together - and yet she's unmistakably a very full-figured woman. Usually, when models this size are depicted in the media, they're made to wear frumpy, matronly clothing, but if a larger woman wears youthful, feminine attire, she can truly look great at any size.

Tiffany is a lovely model, I know she has also been used by Satu in catalog images for her clothing company "Big on Batik" (www.bigonbatik.com) as well, though I am uncertain if there are any images of her currently on the website.

Satu continues to photograph plus-size models with larger than "industry standard" proportions with great flair. She always uses models of over the size of 18 for her apparel company.

Tiffany IS gorgeous, and what a luscious figure! I wish she, and models like her, would appear in industry ads more often. Usually on the rare occasions that larger models are used, theyre the older frumpy types - which sends a terrible message. But Tiffany is Torrid-age, and they are many truly full-figured young girls would could relate to her. I wish she would create more tests in the style of the first image, which is so beautiful.

I remember Big on Batik from a few years ago. I dont see Tiffany on that site now, but the companys fashions (which used to be muu-muu-ish) have improved a little. This top, for example, is sleeveless and shows off the wearers legs:

Maybe Big on Batik is trying to attract a younger customer base - which would be a great idea. The photography is nice, but if they were to use younger models, they could definitely increase their success.
