View Full Version : Biluzik: The latest in size-celebration

13th July 2008, 03:25
In a post that appeared on this site back in September of last year, we introduced the world to Biluzik, a European company that could be dubbed the "Spanish Torrid."

Now, after perusing Biluzik's spring/summer 2008 campaign, we are prepared to bestow another moniker on this visionary label:

The most size-positive company in the world

* * *

It is remarkable to see how far Biluzik has advanced in photography and presentation from last year's promotion to this year's, and most of the best images in the current campaign feature Biluzik's star model, the auburn-haired beauty whom we singled out for praise in the company's first showing.

This young vixen has clearly put on weight since last year's photoshoot, and as a result, she looks more attractive than ever. Her arms are rounder, her waist is curvier, and her lovely face is fuller than before. But what makes this campaign so advanced is that the photographer unapologetically celebrates her luscious curves, and allows the model to show off her increased weight and beauty in a confident manner.

No, more than that: The model's poses not only show off her soft, well-fed figure in a comfortable and confident way, but in an alluring way. In this brilliant image, the model displays her generous waist in an almost provocative manner. Her stance indicates an awareness that this sensual figure feature is precisely what will attract the viewer.

Another intensely sensual image is the following, in which the model positions herself at the window, deliberately allowing the light to illuminate her sumptuous, healthy figure, and proudly displaying her reverse-view contours. She gives the impression that she wants to be looked at, that she relishes the viewer's mesmerized, adoring gaze.

Nowhere is the increased beauty of the model's figure more evident than in a new photo showing her seated, which is a deliberate revisit of last year's pose. By contrast, that earlier image seems almost deficient,

while in the new picture, the model's shapely waist is clearly fuller and more substantial. Furthermore, notice that in this image she wears a cap-sleeve top that shows off her luscious arms, which were previously hidden. The photo indicates that her self-confidence her increased in equal measure with her weight--which is a thrilling and wholly positive message to be sending to Biluzik's young, curvy customers. The bed in the background, as well as the model's inviting expression, adds a subtle frisson to the image.

In one of the company's clever promotional ideas, it has mocked up one of its evening-wear images as a quasi-magazine cover.

Seen in close-up, our model look very cute--and notice her curvy waist pressing against her shirt.

But although the company's "nights" promotion is the first thing that captures the viewer's interest in the current campaign, Biluzik also offers a selection of casual daywear. While these simple pieces may lack the romanticism of some of Torrid's more feminine designs, the pictures are excitingly size-positive.

Note in particular this gorgeous photo (brightened to show the detail in the slacks). We dare any other junior-plus companies to produce an image as pro-curvy as this. The red colour of the top exhibits the substantial swell of the model's waist--but again, she stands with a cool, casual self-assurance, exhibiting even a touch of conceit in her eyes, knowing that the viewer will find her opulent figure irresistible. Observe the size-positive touches like the rounded curve of her abdomen, and the creases in the fabric of the slacks--as if they could barely accommodate her womanly legs. This is size celebration taken to a whole new level. Yet in truth, why should the picture be considered radical? The model's soft appearance simply reflects the look of the majority of young women today--girls who should feel just as comfortable with themselves as she clearly does.

One of the things that makes this model such a charmer is that she radiates a happiness in many of her images--the happiness of not starving, of eating whatever she likes, and devoting her time to more enjoyable pursuits than mindless gym-torture. In this picture of the model with her friends, the fitted top again shows off her curvy waist. Although t-shirts are not the most feminine of apparel, the close fit of Biluzik's tops makes them attractive pieces, as they define their wearers' curves.

In an over-the-shoulder pose recalling Shannon Marie, the model exhibits more of her come-hither, you-want-me vanity. It is remarkable how much more confident she has become since her previous Biluzik campaign. Perhaps the experience of being photographed allowed her to discover her own attractions--which have so dramatically increased.

The following graffiti-backed images are perhaps a shade less interesting than the others, but this picture does gives a sense of the model's delicious legs. The pose is a clever one, as it exhibits details like the soft curve along her back, the swell of her waist, and a hint of decolletage. Brighter monitors will also show the detail in the capris. Notice how snugly they fit, like a second skin.

Our model looks adorable in this cute close-up--and note her ever-so-charming gesture of playing with her hair, like an innocent schoolgirl who is not so innocent that she doesn't know how to toy with a suitor's heart.

A longer view shows that for all of her newfound fullness, the model possesses a very womanly shape. The breadth of her hips balances her upper body, creating an overall curvy silhouette.

And finally, here we see a casual, back-to-school image. And yet even in this picture, the model appears sensually beautiful. Her look of self-satisfaction is intoxicating. Notice also the alluring detail of the open neckline, with no shirt visible beneath her jacket. This subtle display of bare skin--showing the fullness around the neck, with the clavicle wholly submerged--is enough to make the viewer's heart flutter.

And finally, although Biluzik's auburn-haired charmer completely steals the show in this campaign, we do wish to feature at least one attractive and size-positive picture of the company's brunette model. Notice how full and soft is the model's arm in the following picture. In fact, the photograph is carefully composed so that her shapely arm is the focus of interest. The model is looking in the direction of someone who has noticed her--as if she has deliberately displayed her generous arm to get their attention. Like our auburn-haired stunner, this model too displays long tresses--the better to capture viewers' hearts.

* * *

As we noted in several recent posts--particularly those about Angela Perez and Tiffany Kaelin--the public is sick to death of faux-plus models, and eager to see younger, fuller-figured talents. Biluzik is a rare example of a retailer that actually features larger models in its promotional campaigns--and we applaud them for doing so.

Moreover, it is exciting to see that Biluzik's star model has visibly enhanced her figure, and that the photographer's images display her increased fullness as an unmistakably alluring trait.

One can only hope that Biluzik's current promotion provides an example for other labels and retailers to follow, encouraging them once and for all to stop their insulting use of overly-tall size 10/12s, and to begin using more generously proportioned models.

This is actually what I've been hoping for. I too am sick of the faux-plus 5 foot 11 inch size 10s and 12s. Many customers are anxious to see models who are size 18 plus.

I can barely put into words how thrilled I am to see this campaign. At last, a retailer employing true plus-size models who still look young and cute, not matronly. Better yet, showing off their visibly plus features instead of hiding them. It's brilliant.

But why is it so rare? Campaigns like this should be the norm, not the exception. The Biluzik models have attractive figures, they make the clothing look good - why is this so novel?

My only regret is that this is a European campaign, not a North American one. I hope more retailers on this side of the Atlantic adopt Biluzik's approach, and cast fuller-figured models in their promotions.

Curvy models with normal heights do exist (Valerie! Christina!) - let's see more of them...
Readers who enjoyed the S/S '08 campaign from Biluzik will be happy to see that the company has now added a behind-the-scenes slideshow of the photoshoot that produced this size-positive campaign, featuring many more images of their popular auburn-haired cutie.

Notice her shapely arms, as defined by the fitted fabric of this top.

And note here, in this shot of Biluzik's model trio, that the auburn-haired beauty is the shorted and fullest-figured of the group--and also the most beautiful.

The company also recently released a "24 Hours in Blue" ad featuring a different version of a picture that appeared earlier in this thread. Observe how the addition of colour allows the viewer more clearly to see the sensual fullness of the model's waist and abdomen.

To see more behind-the-scenes photos, visit the Biluzik home page (linked above), and click on the "Making off" (undoubtedly a typo for "making of") star graphic.

We simply cannot offer sufficient praise to this daring Spanish company for featuring such a genuinely full-figured and attractive model in its campaign. If only more retailers would follow Biluzik's example.
