Once every season, LouLou magazine, a Canadian fashion publication, includes a supplement which focusses on full-figure trends.

The April 2009 issue of LouLou includes the magazine's spring plus-size supplement, and, as was the case in past issues, the supplement includes two or three bona fide masterpieces of timeless beauty.

* * *

The newest supplement also continues the publication's tradition of improving with every new issue. This time, fans have something to enthuse about in its editorial pages, not just in its ads. LouLou has wisely enlisted the services of drop-dead-gorgeous Canadian model Justine Legault for a two-page editorial that, while simple, admirably showcases her luscious figure and breathtakingly beautiful facial features.

Although the first outfit is somewhat body-disguising, one still perceives the womanly fullness of Justine's alluringly pear-shaped figure.

But zooming in close on the image causes one to gasp in awe. Mademoiselle Legault nearly rivals Shannon Marie for loveliest plus-size model of all time. Her dewey-eyed look, with those big baby blues, melts the heart. Her honey-golden hair cascades over her shoulders is soft, natural waves. She has a fullness in her facial features and a rich, pink flush that women only acquire when they indulge themselves freely rather than starving themselves. Her gaze blends childlike innocence and ingenue allure into a marvel of soft sensuality. The cut of her blouse is deep enough to offer a coy suggestion of decolletage. Such goddesses seldom inhabit this world, and when they do, they exist to be worshipped and spoiled their whole lives--which is the ultimate pleasure for the suitors to whom they allow this privilege.

The second page of Justine's editorial consists of two smaller pictures that are less remarkable, but still noteworthy.

Like all women, Justine looks more attractive in a skirt than in slacks, and this skirt is particularly effective, as it is sufficiently abbreviated and slightly flared, showcasing the womanly allure of the model's desirable 46" hips. All three figure qualities--buxomness, a full waist, and curvy hips--are necessary for true Classical beauty, but of the three a generous hip measurement is the most essential. Very nice pose and expression from Justine as well.

These slacks too suggest the model's luscious hips and thighs. The print of the top is a tad busy, but the cut is very nice, plunging low as it does, and naturally embracing the model's unconstricted waist.

* * *

Still, encouraging as it is to see a worthwhile editorial in LouLou with a beautiful model, the most notable images in the latest supplement are once again the MXM ads featuring Kailee O'Sullivan.

Most gorgeous of all is the following tear sheet, which shows the central image of the campaign.

As we discussed in an essay on this forum several years ago, peasant blouses decorated with folk embroidery are highly appropriate items for plus-size models to wear, inasmuch as they harken back to pre-modern ages when the timeless ideal of beauty held sway. These romantic fashions have nothing to do with the '60s--they long predate the 20th century, and are part of the distaff folk traditions of Central Europe and Eastern Europe.

The top that Kailee wears in this image is a particularly attractive peasant style. This floral design could have come straight from pre-industrial Poland. The embroidery at the sleeves could have decorated the blouse of the prettiest girl in a Prussian village. The stylist expertly paired it with a skirt, in a true feminine manner, rather than with androgynous slacks. And MXM commendably shot this promotion in an appropriate location--an idyllic, rustic setting that could double for the fields and forests of Pomerania. With her round facial features, Kailee's beauty is suitably unmodern as well, and the result is a picture that successfully eschews the modern world, and takes the viewer back to a better, more beautiful age than our own.

As we come in close, we marvel at how Kailee's tresses glow in the sunlight, as if lit from within. She appears to be an ethereal vision, a folk princess from a bygone era who momentarily blesses the ugly modern world with her presence, to remind humanity of all of the beauty that it has lost. The image is also intensely sensual, as the blouse appears to be slipping off Kailee's shoulders, disclosing her soft neck, and on the verge of falling even further. Her earring, like her bracelets (seen in the full-size scan, above) are opulent, but in a distinctively rustic rather than aristocratic style, further underscoring her identity as a natural spirit; an earth goddess; Freya herself, with her golden-apple orchard in the background. Her commanding gaze demands worship--worship that will be freely, eagerly given. For who could resist her?

But alas, we cannot inhabit the dream-world with Freya forever, so the next image takes us back to the present day, although retaining the idyllic setting. The lush, tall grass wonderfully complements the purple hue of Kailee's outfit. Again, the top discloses Kailee's soft arms and shoulders--figure features that plus-size goddesses should bare whenever possible. The elaborate accessories possess an elemental quality, like gold roughly beaten into beads by ancient craftsmen, or precious stones smoothed by millennia of waves crashing over them on the beaches. The hat and the chair are the somewhat more contemporary elements that localize the picture in the present (although even those have a wonderfully organic look). Except for those, one could still see Kailee in this image as the most beautiful girl in an Old World community, adorned in the rich gifts and garments that have been presented to her by her countless suitors.

Miss O'Sullivan's final two MXM pages are a recto and verso pair, with one picture unhappily split between the two. Rather than attempting to merge them, we will discuss the pages separately.

These ads bring the MXM styles wholly into the contemporary realm, but the images are still effective presentations of Kailee's beauty.

The fabric of the checkered top looks a bit stiff, but the design at the bust is extremely attractive. In fact, no cut is more flattering on a buxom model like Kailee. It reveals a dizzying expanse of her shoulders and upper body, all of which appear seductively soft and muscle-free. Her tresses cascade in thick, heavy waves, intensifying the sensuality.

The t-shirt's logo may localize it too much for some customers, but the fitted fabric seductively defines the model's curves.

The denim may be an unfortunate fabric choice for this collection, which otherwise seems so timeless, but the hairstyle is wonderful.

The recto of this two-page advertisement contains even more attractive images. True, the styling of the larger picture is contemporary, but a camisole is always a pretty, feminine item, and a skirt--even in this print, which isn't for everyone--is ever a prettier choice than slacks.

Although the stylist was undoubtedly required to include such a contemporary look in this collection, she deserves credit for one piece in particular here--the vintage-looking heart locket. And despite the sunglasses, Kailee's facial features look quite pretty here--the babylike softness of her face belying the contemporary trappings of her outfit.

But the final image is the masterpiece of this campaign, and one of Miss O'Sullivan's all-time great creations. The way in which her top reveals a dizzying expanse of soft, white flesh at her back makes her seem exceedingly vulnerable and defenseless, urgently in need of protection. Kailee's fair complexion is instrumental to the beauty of every image in this campaign, but never more so than here, when it heightens her feminine helplessness. And yet the look in her eyes is not frightened or subdued, but pouty and spoiled--irresistibly so--as if she realizes that her very weakness is what actually gives her power, a power that no admirer can resist. The hairstyle in this image seems a tad more dishevelled and windblown, adding to the intimacy of the picture. The vibrant colour of the top suggests the model's own robust passions. There is also a wonderful tension in the image, as the viewer senses that Kailee will momentarily drop her arm, revealing her voluptuous profile. With the natural setting, the figure-disclosing top, the softness of the model's body, the girlish poutiness of her expression, and her personal attractiveness, this is a well-nigh ideal depiction of timeless beauty.

* * *

Kudos to LouLou magazine for producing an admirable plus-size pubilcation. One only wishes that this supplement would appear in each issue of the magazine rather than quarterly. Or better yet, that it would be spun off into a magazine of its own.

And bravo to MXM for assembling a gorgeous promotion in which the folkloric attire, the natural settings, and the Old World beauty of the model combine into an aesthetically harmonious whole, and one of the brand's best campaigns to date.

I have been coming back to this picture time and again over the past few weeks and I'm still amazed by it. More than almost any picture I can think of, this is an example of the feminine look of another time reincarnated in the present. There is so much beauty in this image that it's almost erotic, even though (or maybe because) Justine looks so innocent.

Without exaggeration, she really is one of the most gorgeous women ever.
