View Full Version : Lane Bryant runway show 2000 (VIDEO)

Here's something interesting. This is the video of the first-ever Lane Bryant "Cacique" lingerie runway show, from Feb. 1st, 2000:

<object width="560" height="450"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QYPvdZIxWCo?fs=1&amp; hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QYPvdZIxWCo?fs=1&amp; hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="450"></embed></object>

The show is divided into five sections: white, deep sea blue, fucsia/red, animal prints, and black.

What impresses me, above all, is how effective a video it is. It's very cleverly edited, and has a catchy soundtrack.

I also like the fact that the runway show itself resembles a real fashion catwalk. The later Lane Bryant productions were possibly a bit too elaborate, with the entertainers diverting attention from the models.

The show has great visuals, like the smoky entranceway, with the models emerging from behind white mist. Everything about the presentation speaks of high production values.

However, watching the video reminds me of two things that were always a source of great regret about Lane Bryant's catwalk events:

1. The shows unfortunately used numerous faux-plus models. This may even have been where the whole faux-plus problem got started. It wasn't until the final Lane Bryant show, in 2003, that the company got it right by casting fuller-figured girls.

2. The shows missed out on using fan-favourite goddesses. I would have given anything to see Shannon Marie or Barbara Brickner in one of these events. I can't understand why the company didn't feature them. But Lane Bryant's casting has always been a bit odd. LB has a baffling history of avoiding publicly loved models, and instead using girls whom the agencies seem to push.

On the other hand, it's wonderful to see Lara Johnson again (although thin, she was very pretty at this time), as well as Kate Dillon, Natalie Laughlin, Mia Tyler at her most attractive, and Anna Nicole Smith in a good phase of her career. Anna is actually quite effective on the runway, as is Kate (obviously benefitting from her straight-size experience). But Mia kind of steals the show in her two segments.

The only real mistake, apart from the two points I made above, is the intrusion of Kathy Najimy. She seems out of place, and, because she isn't a model, suffers from a distractingly poor walk.

But those concerns aside, it's a great show, and a terrific video. It's a shame that Lane Bryant doesn't run these events anymore. A production like this with some of today's most popular goddesses, such as Kelsey Olson, Charlotte Coyle, Christina Schmidt, Kailee O'Sullivan, Justine Legault, Katherine Roll, etc., would be spectacular.

Oh, and here's a follow-up video comprising supplemental material about the show,

<object width="560" height="450"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CMEUea1qTGM?fs=1&amp; hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CMEUea1qTGM?fs=1&amp; hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="450"></embed></object>

such as associated news reports, and brief interviews with Emme, Kate Dillon, etc.

<br>Lane Bryant took care to have its first media-targeted runway show exhibit an air of professionalism, and to present its models in the best possible light. Also, since Lane Bryant generally does lingerie quite well, the models come off looking quite attractive, not overly risqué.

The fact that the first three Cacique shows didn't book fuller-figured girls is, however, a source of lasting regret.

Although Kate Dillon is regrettably smaller in the video than she was when she first embarked on her curvy comeback, she still exhibits a degree of fullness in her figure.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap005.jpg"></center><p>She also benefits greatly from the long, romantic red tresses that she sported at the time.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap009.jpg"></center><p>Seeing Lara Johnson at this stage of her career is both wonderful and heartbreaking. She is so exquisitely pretty, with an childlike look that no other model of her day possessed. In this show, Lara is a veritable dream of beauty, delicate and ethereal, yet soft and curvy as well.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap018.jpg"></center><p>Fans always earnestly hoped that she would become fuller-figured, but tragically, it never happened. In many ways, Kelsey Olson, who similarly possess babylike facial features, has become the realization of the dreams that fans once had for Lara.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap023.jpg"></center><p>Alice Barstow also appears in the video, and while she too was a faux-plus model, she benefits from a particularly gorgeous hairstyle in this runway show. She looks quite angelic and romantic.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap035.jpg"></center><p>A young Audra Marie appears as well, but observe how much curvier she is in this, the earliest phase of her career, than she later became.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap042.jpg"></center><p>You can see the soft, sensual fullness around her midsection.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap040.jpg"></center><p>It's a great pity that Audra subsequently diminished and over-toned her figure, because her physique is feminine and beautiful in this video.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap043.jpg"></center><p>Sensual wardrobe on Kate.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap047.jpg"></center><p>Kate benefits from particularly effective styling in every one of her outfits.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap050.jpg"></center><p>Fans still maintain that if Lara Johnson had become fuller-figured, she would have been one of the most beautiful of all plus-size models, one who could have significantly altered public perceptions about weight and beauty.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap053.jpg"></center><p>Although she is regrettably slim, you can see how alluringly untoned her figure is at this time, with seductive curves at her midsection. Such visible softness is just as important an aspect of timeless beauty as weight and size.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap054.jpg"></center><p>But alas, instead of growing fuller, Lara's figure dwindled in subsequent years. Lara thus represents a missed opportunity for size-celebration as significant as if she had stopped modelling altogether.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap070.jpg"></center><p>But looking at her extraordinary work in this video brings back the memory of how exciting she was, and the high hopes that everyone had for her when her career began.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap062.jpg"></center><p>Natalie Laughlin doesn't get as much screen time in the video as one would have expected, given her supermodel status, but she does look luscious in her clips, with curvy arms and heavy, bedroom tresses.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap072.jpg"></center><p>As you watch the video, note the almost wounded look in Alice Barstow's eyes every time she appears. It's difficult to tell whether she adopts this demeanour as a deliberate catwalk style, or whether she feels vulnerable on the runway in such skimpy attire.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap081.jpg"></center><p>Don't miss an eye-catching moment as the delicate strap of Alice's blouse slips off of her shoulder. Little details such as this, whether planned or not, endow a lingerie show with considerable <i>frisson.</i><p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap083.jpg"></center><p>In Audra Marie's second outfit, her figure appears even more decadent than before.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap086.jpg"></center><p>The fullness around her waist is intensely seductive. It's a wonder that plus-size models aren't universally preferred as lingerie models to underweight waifs, for only full-figured girls possess the curves that make sleepwear appear truly desirable.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap087.jpg"></center><p>Mia Tyler was uniquely positioned in the industry at the time of this show, straddling the line between celebrity and model. Lane Bryant marks her appearances with a textual tag, as they do for Anna Nicole and Kathy Najimy.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap090.jpg"></center><p>Notice that, because she benefits from her non-Amazonian height (5'7), Mia looks appealingly fuller than many of the other girls, more like what a plus-size runway model <i>should</I> look like, in terms of physique--i.e., visibly full-figured.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap091.jpg"></center><p>And truth be told, Mia does appear quite attractive in the show.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap092.jpg"></center><p>If her runway technique isn't quite as polished as, say, Kate Dillon's, she more than makes up for it with her tremendous self-assurance and flair for the dramatic.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap093.jpg"></center><p>Watch how, in her two appearance on the runway, she adds unique bits of dramatic business that effectively steal the show. Here, she tugs at the lip of her top,<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap094.jpg"></center><p>then does a shimmy at the end of the runway.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap097.jpg"></center><p>Many of the subsequent newscasts about this event specifically featured clips of Mia on the runway.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap098.jpg"></center><p>Her curves are evident as the pivots and saunters down the catwalk.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap099.jpg"></center><p>Mia was officially signed with a plus-size agency at the time (Wilhelmina) and it was considered quite a coup for the industry to enlist her as a working plus-size model.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap100.jpg"></center><p>Just look at how elfin Lara looks in her clips, how irresistibly innocent, helpless, and in need of protection.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap101.jpg"></center><p>Kate's animal-print outfit, shown below, is another styling triumph. The juxtaposition of the "wild" fabric against her soft, fair skin, is a sensual visual.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap110.jpg"></center><p>The final segment of the show features the models emerging in a variety of black-themed outfits, and positioning themselves on either side of the catwalk. Natalie's attire consists of closely fitted black pants that seductively define her curvy abdomen.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap118.jpg"></center><p>Lara looks graceful, almost balletic, as she emerges.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap126.jpg"></center><p>She adopts a distinctive hands-behind-the-back stance when she hits her mark on the runway.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap130.jpg"></center><p>The camera catches a dramatic shot of Paryse stepping forth from the white smoke of the doorway, as if congealing from the mist.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap136.jpg"></center><p>Kate Dillon's curves are more evident in this final outfit than at any other point in the show. She is very buxom, and displays a trace of curves around her midsection. The fairness of her skin gives her an aesthetic advantage over most of the other models.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap143.jpg"></center><p>Notice the seductive look that she adopts as she stands on the runway--a languorous expression that is overwhelmingly alluring, and ideally suited for a lingerie show.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap148.jpg"></center><p>In her second appearance on the catwalk, Mia Tyler creates the visual high point of the event.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap152.jpg"></center><p>As she walks down the runway, she dramatically plunges her hand into her hair.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap154.jpg"></center><p>The fact that her outfit is strapless and sleeveless heightens the effect. As she brushes away her hair, she exposes a dizzying expanse of her person.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap156.jpg"></center><p>She creates the alluring impression of a goddess just emerging from the bath.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap158.jpg"></center><p>With this stunning gesture, Mia reminds the other models--and all curvy women watching the show--that they deserve to feel like Victoria's Secret angels, for they are all more gorgeous than any waifs.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap160.jpg"></center><p>As the models depart, viewers catch a glimpse of the soft, sensual contours along Kate's back. What a pity that she is no longer this curvy today (let alone as gorgeously full-figured as she was a year or two earlier). Would that she were.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap163.jpg"></center><p><center>* * *</center><p>Don't miss several interesting behind-the-scenes moments in the supplementary video about the show, including interview clips with Kate Dillon,<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap164.jpg"></center><p>and backstage views of Natalie Laughlin (displaying an attractively curvy waist),<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap176.jpg"></center><p>and an elegant Lara Johnson.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap177.jpg"></center><p>A snippet from the <i>Today</I> show even features several of the models "flashing" the weather reporter, as part of the promotion for the event.<p><center><img src="http://www.judgmentofparis.com/forum/lb2000/cap201.jpg"></center><p><center>* * *</center><p>Anyone looking to do a plus-size runway show can take many cues from this video, especially in terms of style, presentation, and production values. With fuller-figured models--especially the most popular among today's goddesses--a show such as this, held today, would have tremendous public impact.

I strongly agree. It's a great runway show, and a terrific video, exquisitely produced, but fuller-figured model choices would have made the event even bolder.

This issue reminds me of the Mode runway-show video that was posted (http://www.judgmentofparis.com/board/showthread.php?t=158) on this forum a while back, and is now on YouTube:

That show had the opposite problem: the models were luscious and stunning - and yes, Barbara Brickner was among them, as well as a fuller-figured Kate Dillon - but the attire was quite dull, and the production values were very basic.

Couple the style, quality and visual interest of the Lane Bryant Cacique show with models as curvy as the ones in the Mode video, and you have the perfect plus-size runway event.

While flipping through channels this evening, I saw that The Victoria's Secret show was held tonight. I couldn't watch more than five minutes. It was awful. Even for the fashion industry, the models looked starved, leathery, and half-masculine. Ugh.

All I could think of was how much more beautiful the models looked in lingerie in the Lane Bryant show, so I went back to this video for an antidote.

I also reflected on the many other exciting appearances by plus-size models on the runway, including Kailee for Simply Be:

Or the FFFWeek show, or Christina Schmidt's runway appearances earlier this year:

or the recent Just My Size show:

All the razzle-dazzle of Victoria's Secret couldn't conceal the fact that the models themselves looked horribly skeletal and emaciated. If the company wanted to show sensuality, it should have featured far curvier models.
