22nd September 2006, 19:26
Late last year, we reviewed an issue of Big is Beautiful, which is a Dutch magazine devoted to plus-size fashions.

The new Fall 2006 issue has just been released, and it includes an article about plus-size supermodels, with references to Barbara Brickner, Charlotte Coyle, Crystal Renn, and Kate Dillon. It even mentions our own Web site (as indicated below), amusingly making this The Judgment of Paris's second official "tear sheet":

For the benefit of readers whose Dutch is a little rusty, Kirsten has kindly provided a translation of this text:

International plus-size top models

The successful plus-size models of the moment are healthy role models for women and girls. Not only because of their attractive appearance, but also because acceptance of their bodies is the basis of their success.

CHARLOTTE COYLE: Charlotte Coyle began to develop a full figure when she was four years old. When only eight, she began to starve herself, with the sad result that by twelve years old she suffered from an eating disorder. Then, she decided to live in the U.S. for three years, and participated in a plus-size modeling competition--which she promptly won. She subsequently returned to England and is, at size 46, a successful plus-size model. Her belief that she is beautiful and sexy, fully accepting her clothing size, was her salvation. Charlotte organized a plus-size beauty contest, which was broadcast in the UK on August 31, and was also seen in Belgium on the program Koppen.

KATE DILLON: The American Kate Dillon began her career as an "ordinary" photo- and catwalk-model. She became a great success, but lived on fruit in order to maintain a size 34, at the demand of her agent, who wanted her to lose even more. When someone pointed out to her that she was beautiful the way she naturally is, something snapped in Kate. She admitted that while in the modeling business, she suffered from anorexia from the ages of twelve to nineteen. In the meantime, she has returned, this time happy and healthy, a size 42 and one of Wilhelmina's most successful plus-size models.

Interested in plus-size models? The website www.judgmentofparis.com features many more. Webmaster Heinrich Saint-Germain keeps abreast of industry developments.

Big is Beautiful is a fairly high-quality magazine, physically as large as W, and as thick as Vogue, featuring numerous plus-size fashion editorials and advertisements. The current issue includes a full-size image of Crystal Renn, as well as an editorial starring lovely Dutch model Laetitia. Despite the linguistic barrier, it's well worth having for the pictures alone.

European residents may subscribe via the magazine's official Web site, while overseas readers may obtain subscriptions from TypicalDutchStuff.com.

As one of the world's very few plus-size magazines, we wish Big is Beautiful continued success, and hope to see it published in more languages and countries in the near future.
