Melissa O'Neil was the 2005 winner of Canadian Idol (which, as the name suggests, is the Canadian version of American Idol).

Melissa is rather pretty,

but more importantly, she is somewhat curvy. These reality shows can be awful, but it was great to see this contest choose a winner who is far removed from a anorexic twig, and has a natural, soft figure.

With her win, and her subsequent career, she has attracted the usual heated discussions about body image and celebrity. But from what I've found, many individuals have spoken out in favour of her size, and have rounded on anyone who has criticized her.

Melissa's best Idol performace was a rendition of "De-Lovely," which I will embed as a video, below. She looks very cute here, and the styling is gorgeous. She wears a very feminine dress (seen in the above image), with a garland in her hair, and her curvy figure gives her a beautiful silhouette.

When she sings the line, "...it's delightful , it's delicious, it's delectable, it's delirious...," it's easy to match the words to the singer.

That was in 2005. She recently made a return appearance on this year's finale of Canadian Idol, and although this time, the styling and the song were regrettably modern, at least the appearance showed that Melissa has thankfully remained curvaceous, and has not given in to industry pressure to starve. Hopefully, she never will.

Melissa does indeed look "de-lovely" in her video performance. I showed the clip to a number of male friends, who remarked on how frankly "hot" she appeared. It just goes to show you that girls do not need to dress in a trashy modern manner (let alone be thin) to look sexy. All it takes is a feminine, figure-embracing, curve-accentuating style, and a girlish touch or two, like that garland in Melissa's tresses.

No matter what today's magazines or music videos may claim, most men find a "pretty" look to be much sexier than a vulgar or modern appearance. It is possible to be alluring without being sleazy.
