It is always a delight to see plus-size models getting the recognition that they deserve, and showing up on the covers of national magazines. If the publishing world were wiser, it would exclusively use plus-size models as cover girls, since well-fed goddesses are far more effective at creating aspirational ideals of beauty than are undernourished waifs. But for now, even solitary cover appearances represent a step in the right direction. Here we see Yanderis (Dorothy Combs Models, Miami) on the cover of a Hispanic magazine titled Veintitantos (which in English means, "Twentysomething"). Although we do not know a word of Spanish, enthusiastic cover lines such as "Vivan las curvas!" and "Curvilinea y sexy" are self-explanatory. And best of all, even if this cover also contains size-negative blurbs, well . . . mixed messages are not in our vocabulary (in any language). ![]() This is as good an opportunity as any to share a few more images of this lovely model, for the benefit of her many fans. We have here a potpourri of test images and tear sheets, all united by the fact that they show Yanderis looking truly stunning. ![]() One of Yanderis's new tear sheets likewise adheres to this popular, "all-curves-are-beautiful" principle. Veintitantos readers will undoubtedly feel better about their own curvaceous midriffs, after seeing a plus-size model exhibiting this attractive trait, and looking better than any malnourished model with what Hilary Alexander calls a "rack-of-ribs torso." ![]() And speaking of Ms. Alexander (and her recent size-positive swimwear article), here is an image of Yanderis on the beach. Alas, it is a bit too modest to be a truly subversive swimwear photo, but the colours are vibrant, the model's expression lovely, and sometimes, suggestion can be altogether as effective as exposition. ![]() Here is another angle on Yanderis's outfit from the recent "Silver and Gold" thread. Besides the fact that it exhibits Yanderis's "curvilinea y sexy" figure, this image deserves notice because of two attractive details: that decorative wrought-iron railing (which shows how, even in an urban environment, it is always possible to find opulent architectural elements that compliment a plus-size model's unmodern beauty), and that gorgeous Grecian bracelet (which is an appropriately classical accessory for this present-day goddess). ![]() And finally, here is an eye-catching headshot of Yanderis in full seductress mode. Note her trademark mesmerizing eyes, and exotic lipgloss. ![]() Faced with such beauty, what can anyone say, but . . . "Vivan las curvas!" Last edited by HSG : 18th June 2006 at 06:22. |

I don't know Spanish either, but I was intrigued by the top blurb on the Veintitantos cover, which is, "Engrandece tu belleza."
An online translatation site rendered "tu bellezza" as "your beauty" (which is what I expected), and when I looked up "engrandece," Google directed me to "engrandecer," which, according to an online Spanish-English dictionary, is a transitive verb that means: 1. to grow in stature 2. to increase So, the cover line literally means "Increase your beauty." But since the verb also means "grow in stature," that phrase connotes a gain in size as well. Thus, the delightful suggestion of the line is, "Become fuller figured and thereby more beautiful" -- and right beside it, the photo of Yanderis (i.e., a plus-size model) proves the point! |

Here's a special treat for all of the Yanderis fans out there--a scan of her new Dorothy Combs Models composite card. You may click on the image to view it larger: ![]() The cover headshot (left) is particularly striking, and effecitvely emphasizes her hypnotic, hazel-coloured eyes. And in case you can't make out the stats on the card, her measurements are given as 38c-35-44. |
