Default Biluzik: F/W 2008

In its Fall/Winter 2008 campaign, the Spanish plus-size label Biluzik (the "Iberian Torrid") maintains and solidifies its reputation as the most size-positive company in the world.

The campaign features the company's popular signature model, a lovely and very well-fed young beauty whose luscious curves have not diminished, but have actually increased for this promotion.

The central image of this campaign, and altogether one of the most sensual and progressive photographs that any full-figured model has ever produced, is the following.

The model's waist is very full--soft and rounded, and not disguised in any way. The sweater is cozy, but fitted enough so that the swell of her midriff beneath is clearly visible. She stands comfortably, not "sucking in" at all, but showing off her figure in a way that is meant to be casually seductive. The business with the eyeglasses, the hand-on-the-hip pose, the coy glance--everything about the image typifies a "fashion model." Yet her decadent figure is so opulently proportioned that it is as far removed from the Vogue standard as possible. The image breaks every stifling "rule" of fashion photography, and boldly presents the model's generous waist as her most alluring feature--which it surely is. The persona that she creates is captivating--a young vixen who is playful, supremely self-confident, and given to self-indulgence.

A second image in a similar vein is a tad less successful, because the model's figure doesn't appear quite as relaxed, and the top is a shade too loose. Nevertheless, this is still a remarkable presentation in its own right, and worlds beyond what any other plus-size company would permit. Here, the viewer's attention is drawn to the model's facial features, which appear very soft and round, with that special look of attractive fullness that only derives from not starving. The model's faraway gaze is quite lovely, and the way in which her hair flows voluminously around her face, framing it, is wonderful to see.

A close-up shows the beauty of the model's round facial features, highlighting her light-green eyes. Her sheer sleeves disclose the attractive, muscle-free softness of her arms. Although the image is abbreviated, notice that what we do see of the model's midsection shows it sensually pressing against the fabric of her top, shaping it to its own roundness, and suggesting the lovely contours that exist below the cut.

The most playful image of the campaign is the following, which shows our curvaceous cutie in an ecstatic moment of dance. Again, one sees the seductive roundness of her waist, and the soft fullness of her neck and facial features. Hardly a campaign goes by that doesn't offer ample testimony as to why plus-size models require long, luxuriant tresses. This image shows what a captivating effect a long-haired goddess can achieve, simply with a toss of her head. In real life, a motion like this would produce audible gasps of desire from every male viewer. Incidentally, the slogan on the top, "Good girls party," fits the model's persona--someone who enjoys all of life's pleasures, from flirtatiousness to dance to social interaction, but whose sole "vice" (rich foods of every variety) is a very innocent and beneficial one.

This picture is quite creative, with the model half-hidden behind faux-branches, and looking at the viewer with a coy "Oh, you've found me" glance. She seems vulnerable here, yet somehow in control of the situation, with a look of tremulous invitation in her eyes. She seems secretly aware of her own delightfulness. Her face appears very round, her plump cheeks almost pillow-like. (Ideal facial features such as hers comprise high cheekbones submerged in soft fullness.) And notice how fair her complexion is--matching the wintry quality conveyed by the white branches. In the midst of a chilly environment, the model's softness is a promise of warmth.

The final image of the main promotion shows a full-length view of the model, one which exhibits her natural proportions. She is buxom, to be sure, but her waist and hips are even more dramatically full--reminding one that when it comes to the three female body types (hourglass, apple, pear), the ideal plus-size model is a combination of all three. The waist is attractively delineated by the fitted top. But this image also displays a feature that is rarely shown in fashion images--the generous proportions of the model's thighs, defined by her denim slacks. All of these "forbidden" details of her figure are clearly apparent in this picture, but what makes it so successful is the model's own self-confidence, and the fact that the photo is shot in a fashionable rather than merely clinical way.

Nearly as exciting as Biluzik's campaign images are its behind-the-scenes "making of" photos. Here we see the company's star model being made up for the shoot. Her facial features appear sensually full, and notice even the soft curves of her throat. (No Stephenie Meyer character could resist her.)

Her face looks especially round here, and one even sees an attractive curve under her chin.

Here, our starlet carefully fits her body between the densely-packed objects on set.

And here is a special, extra image that only Biluzik would include--a shot of the table-full of carbohydrate-rich foodstuffs that they provided for their appetitive model to keep her satisfied during the shoot.

Kudos to Biluzik for another groundbreaking campaign, and to their signature model for maintaining her curvy figure. Many companies on both sides of the Atlantic could learn a lesson from Biluzik on how to create genuinely size-positive and fashionable campaigns. In particular, the first image in this thread should show the world that a full waist is nothing to hide, but that it can and should be celebrated. Hopefully, upon seeing this image, young girls with comparable proportions will feel more confident about their own appearance, and will feel emboldened to show off their curves in a similar fashion.

I absolutely adore this picture. It's possibly the most size-positive photo I've ever seen. I wish American retailers had the courage to produce images like this. She looks so relaxed and...self-satisfied.

I especially love the fact that she's clearly flirting. You can tell that she expects her looks to win her whatever guy she likes.

The world is filled with pretty girls with similarly curvy figures, and just think of how much good the fashion industry could do for them if it regularly produced attractive photos like this, showing models so generously proportioned, and so obviously pleased with their own appearance.
