Default Revolution, from India


It's always seemed a bit puzzling that the nation of India--which apparently has a history of featuring fuller-figured actresses in their movie productions--has never attracted world attention for its plus-size fashion industry.

However, a relatively new Indian company appears determined change all that.

"Revolution" is the name of an Indian plus-size retailer, and their current advertising campaign features a number of attractive images. The models are only somewhat pretty, but their size and shape, and the overall aesthetic of the campaign, is ideal.

Here, in an opulent set--as if being revealed by the opened curtains--stands one of the models, coyly caressing the drapes. Her top is loose, but suggests attractively generous hips and a full waist.

Another images shows the model in a Torrid-like top. Her bare arms are seductively soft, free of any unappealing muscle tone, their attractive shape instead due to natural fullness.

The finest image of the campaign is this one, showing two well-fed models in tightly-fitted dresses, flashing come-hither glances. Their garments alluringly embrace their shapely contours, and their poses are strategically chosen for figure-display. Note the intoxicating softness of the arms of the model on the right, and how the delicate straps of the dress press against her skin. Her pose, her look, is that of a woman who knows that her sumptuous curves make her irresistible, and she is pleased to show them off.

These images express unapologetic body-love, a philosophy that is confirmed by the mission statement that appears on the site's cover page:

Revolution pioneered the concept of plus-size fashion in India, and is very proud to be a brand that accepts women as they are. As Nisha Somaia, Director, Revolution, puts it, "The entire push of the fashion world is skinny thin, not every woman can look like that. Not accepting oneself leads to low self-esteem and discomfort with oneself. At Revolution, we love and celebrate women for who they are, and provide them with trendy and fashionable clothes. Shopping at Revolution is a fun experience. All women, regardless of size, have a right to fashion."

The success of Revolution is that it has worked at raising low self-esteems and made shopping fun for women. Today, Revolution stands tall with thousands of women behind it - real women who are no longer apologetic about their size or shape; women who love feeling beautiful.

North American plus-size retailers would do well to take the above words to heart, and to adopt the pro-curvy aesthetic of Revolution's images, and incorporate it into their own advertising campaigns.

Here is one more picture from the company site, again showing off the model's full arms, and suggesting the generous proportions of her waist and hips.

These are traits to be celebrated, not disguised; and for an overseas company, Revolution understand this concept better than most.

One cannot really call Revolution's model attractive, but one has to give the company credit for splendid photography and wardrobe styling. This image headlines Revolution's spring/summer campaign, and in many ways, it's a near-perfect photograph. The model's camisole frames her soft figure, and closely embraces her seductively generous waist, defining its roundness. Her arms are attractively full and shapely. The motion in the skirt enhances its appeal, and shows why dresses and skirts are infinitely more fun and flirtatious than slacks, and so much more appealing on plus-size goddesses. The sandy-beach background gives the image the sense of an idyllic, paradisaical retreat, a world of relaxation and pleasure, where a goddess can indulge herself freely and allow her sumptuous beauty to shine and be admired.

Given a model with prettier facial features, the picture would be a masterpiece. Revolution clearly has a solid grasp of the ideals of size-celebration, and is employing them effectively in its advertising. We wish them every success.
