Default ANTM: Whitney, ep.2

Last night, Whitney Thompson fans (already numerous) were treated to the second episode of America's Next Top Model, and were delighted to find that Whitney is even more gorgeous upon a second viewing.

Whitney also demonstrated she is completely brilliant on the runway, and able to create stunning photographs even when the nature of the challenge is contradictory to her own opulent aesthetic.

The episode thankfully began with a brief recap of last week's show, which gave us the opportunity to view parts of the program that we missed. Here is a glimpse (a quick one--apologies for the blurriness) of Whitney during last week's private-schoolgirl photoshoot.

Stunning, just stunning. Whitney has such an aristocratic bearing that she seems perfectly at home in private-school guise.

But even more remarkable is the following gorgeous profile shot, showing Whitney being beautified. Note that she has the ideal facial features--high cheekbones, along with visible fullness in the face. The mixture of these two attributes comprises facial perfection. This is the look of Lillian Russell and Shannon Marie, and indeed, of the greatest beauties in history.

The episode began with the contestants moving in to their modelling apartment. Here we see Whitney (in the white coat) easing onto her raft-like bed. Note the contrast between her rounded contours (visible even beneath the coat) and the hideously malnourished girl in front of her.

The following is a briefly-glimpsed reaction shot from a discussion with the rest of the girls. Apologies for the quality, but it only appeared on-screen for an instant. But even here, one sees a trace of her figure, and of her soft facial features.

The first challenge of the episode was a runway show in Times Square. Here, during the preparation for the event, one sees Whitney's heavily-lidded eyes ("bedroom eyes," as one Web logger described them), and her seductively haughty, "I'm so hot" look.

If the ensuing runway show proved anything, it is that a plus-size model like Whitney can easily outshine any waif on the catwalk. There is no reason why a label such as Badgley-Mischka shouldn't be enlisting the services of full-figured goddesses.

Whitney emerged in an appropriately regal shade of purple, her own opulence matching the splendour of the gown.

The richness of her curves gave the formless dress some much-needed shape. Observe the curves of her figure, discernible through the fabric:

Even a glimpse of a rounded midriff was visible as she did her commanding turn at the runway's edge.

But most impressive of all was the extra moment of presentation that she gave before leaving the runway. First, she posed to one side (note the curve above the edge of the dress, and a hint of a soft waist),

then, she did a half-turn, showing off a shapely arm and non-waif proportions,

and finally, she cast an over-the-shoulder glance worthy of Shannon Marie (whom Whitney somewhat resembles, at least in her facial features). This is the most breathtaking image that the model has created yet, a lively and alluring expression exuding soft sensuality.

When people think of "supermodel glamour," the above picture is what they have in mind, but very few models can actually generate it as well as Whitney can.

Here she is in the runway tent a moment later, justifiably delighted with her own performance.

The episode continued with a visit to the Elite modelling agency--and this, sadly, confirms impossibility of a full-figured contestant ever winning ANTM, since Elite does not represent plus-size models. Nevertheless, there is something extremely fitting about seeing this goddess alongside the agency name, for "elite" she certainly is. Just look at that soft face, and the girlish way in which she touches her own cheek.

Whitney seemed particularly delighted when she learned of the new celebrity judge for this cycle--Paulina Porizkova.

But let us be honest--not even at the peak of her modelling career was Paulina ever in the same league, beauty-wise, as Miss Thompson.

Whitney's brief interview segments offer fans a welcome opportunity to drink in her luscious appearance.

There are very few models of any size who can even approach her loveliness.

Although Whitney is too thin to be a true plus-size model, what aficionados of timeless beauty particularly adore is the "slight rise" of a "slope towards the throat" that she exhibits in many images.

This attractive trait gives her features a richness and luxuriance that epitomizes the plus aesthetic.

Beyond that, Whitney also possesses all of the universally-recognized attributes of feminine beauty, such as high cheekbones and a round facial structure. No one, no matter how media-brainwashed they might be, can deny that she is a goddess.

Incidentally, Whitney's interviews also demonstrate that she has a keen wit, and a lively personality.

Their visit to Elite over, the contestants were next taken to their first competitive photo shoot. A glimpse of Whitney just prior to this event, dressed in her own clothing, shows what a sophisticated fashion sense she has, ultra-chic and elegant.

A moment of cosmetics preparation shows the unadorned attractiveness of her visage.

And ah--surprise, surprise. The theme of the first shoot was homelessness (of all things), and it featured the girls dressed in street clothing. Whitney has such a well-fed, comfortably-indulged look, that no one could possibly confuse her for an actual homeless individual. And yet her talent is such that she earned positive reviews for her performance, even from the show's notoriously size-negative judges. (You can see her actual picture at the show's official site).

The judging took up the last 20 minutes of the show, but every moment was worth watching, because the camera continually zoomed in on Whitney--and with good reason.

Her facial expressions are all captivating, and she approaches the judging as a kind of photo shoot in itself, displaying a variety of emotions. Note the intelligence in her eyes in this photo.

What makes these candid shots so compelling is that Whitney relaxes her face, allowing the full beauty of her round visage to be shown.

Here is a picture we that especially like--as another girl is called out, Whitney's glance almost seems to say, "Pfff--you're nothing compared to me." And she's right.

When she herself is called to approach for the judging, Whitney fairly beams with pride--and deservedly so.

Even during her serious moments, such as the tense instants before the elimination, her dramatic looks rivet the viewer's attention.

And when she is selected, that self-assurance re-emerges, makes her even more irresistible.

One writer has compared Whitney to Suzanne Sugarbaker of Designing Women (played by the young Delta Burke), and in the above image, exuding so much vanity and beauty, the similarity is noticeable.

Here is one more screen capture--a moment of thoughtful reflection from Whitney. When she relaxes her face, she truly is one of the most beautiful women in the world.

How delightful that Whitney made it past the second round, and is proceeding to next week's challenge. With her alluring vanity, her size-positive attitude, and her extraordinary beauty and talent, she is the best plus-size contestant that one could possibly hope for on the show.

And whatever the outcome of the program, if Whitney were to become fuller-figured, she would surely be one of the greatest plus-size models in the world.

For the benefit of Whitney fans, we have compiled several episode excerpts into a brief (90-second) video, linked below.

Whitney is, of course, exciting, dazzling, gorgeous. But one other characteristic that I especially enjoy about her is her voice. She has a genuinely feminine voice, with a delightful cadence that one associates with sororities, and with "college life."

She also has a terrific sense of humour. I laughed out loud at her joke about looking "strung out" in the homeless shoot. She seems like she would be a joy to work with on set. Her soft beauty and talent would make her an excellent model anyway, but her charisma makes her even more endearing.

Oh, and it's true - that first screen capture is a picture for the ages, a perfect presentation of timeless beauty. I can't wait to see Whitney on this week's episode.
