Default Junior plus, today

I came across the following article about the opening of a new Torrid store, and I thought I'd share the link here:

http://www.visaliatimesdelta.com/ap.../807030319/1046

It's a positive piece, with affirmative comments like:

Quote:
"It's hard to find cute plus-size clothes," said 26-year-old Stacy Romero, who, with friend Araceli Andrade, traveled from Porterville for the store's Wednesday opening...

"It's cute fashion, and it's not old lady," said Andrade, 26. "A lot of stuff [elsewhere] is too old."

But that's not the main reason I linked it. What impressed me was how attractive the young girls in the accompanying pictures are. (Note in particular "assistant manager Sara Haver," who is gorgeous.) The girls in the images are much fuller-figured than most of Torrid's models, but they're pretty, and I'd say they better represent Torrid's customers (and plus-size girls in general) than do Torrid's current models - and far, FAR better than the models of any other plus-size client, since most companies don't even feature models as luscious as Torrid's.

Don't get me wrong; I'm a big fan of Torrid's most popular models - at least the curvier, prettier ones like Christina Schmidt (who I'm dying to see again) and Kelsey. But I'd love to see Torrid mix it up a little and use some fuller-figured girls too. The pictures with this article show that bigger girls can be just as stylish and attractive as their smaller peers.

It's nice to see fuller-figured girls representing Torrid--even if it is only in the form of article illustrations. Miss Haver is the girl in the white-and-black print dress on the left in this image from the article,

and on the left in this picture:

The public has a long-standing wish to see fuller-figured models in plus-size fashion ads, and the industry's unwillingness to recognize this desire is by turns puzzling and frustrating. Torrid is definitely better than other companies when it comes to featuring models in larger sizes (and more natural heights), but it can be inconsistent. Whatever else is true, though, Torrid certainly clothes its curvier models in better fashions than its rivals. (Witness Sara's sleeveless styling.)

Perhaps Torrid's latest "model contest" will yield some shapelier (and, ideally, shorter) representatives--girls who more closely approximate the company's customer base. And yes, as Ms. Lopez says, we eagerly look forward to the next campaign featuring Christina and/or Kelsey, both of whom have consistently created photographic magic with Michael Anthony.
