Whitney: CoverGirl ad #10
What a pity that Whitney's CoverGirl commercials are coming to an end. They have been extraordinarily well filmed, with lavish cinematography worthy of a feature movie, and they have shown Whitney looking more beautiful than in any other video or still images.
Fittingly, as the penultimate chapter in this series, last week's ad was especially gorgeous, rivalling Whitney's bicycle-riding spot for sheer beauty (although the cupcake commercial remains the fan favourite, thanks to its delectable pro-indulgence theme).
The most recent ad features Miss Thompson strolling leisurely through the idyllic, dream-like world that CoverGirl has created just for her. It begins with Whitney crossing a rustic covered bridge.
Watch as the sunlight sweeps through the structure while Whitney crosses it, bathing the scene in a golden glow, as if Whitney herself were illuminating the bridge just by her presence.
Next, we see Whitney crossing another bridge--an elegant, curvy, stone construction, with lush greenery in the background.
The styling is marvellous. Whitney is dressed in a lovely lemon shade of yellow that harmonizes with the verdant foliage in the background. This colour is a signature hue for Whitney, one that has recurred in many of her CoverGirl commercials. The sunlight gilds her tresses.
On a practical level, this ad is an eye-makeup promotion, and Whitney's eyes stand out vividly in every frame. Her hair flows dramatically around her. Her complexion glows. She appears more goddesslike than ever before.
As Whitney's stroll continues, her sweater pulls open, displaying her buxom charms. The abbreviated skirt shows off her shapely legs, its flared style infinitely more attractive and feminine than a "pencil" design.
The camera catches her reflection in the shop windows by which she passes.
It is as if she were blessing the city by her presence, impressing upon it an indelible image of her timeless beauty.
Even the cityscapes display a vintage charm. In the following still, note the fascinating ironwork bridge connecting the two buildings in the background. The street itself seems to possess memories of a better, more elegant time--a nobler era, to which Whitney's unmodern beauty harkens back.
This splendid shot of the model walking between beaux-arts pillars further establishes Miss Thompson as a timeless enchantress, albeit in contemporary attire--someone who could have strolled through a Florentine piazza during the Renaissance, on her way to a studio session with Botticelli. In the video, watch as the doves to her right take flight as she passes by.
Besides their gorgeous locations, one of the finest aspects of these CoverGirl ads is the fact that they have accentuated Whitney's curves as much as possible. Here, the outfit--loose as it is--still intimates the generous shape of her figure.
This visual of Whitney strolling through an Arcadian dreamscape resembles an actual painting. Even the leaves of the trees in the background have the "swept" look of brushstrokes. Note the two tiny sparrows perched on the fence just to the right of the model. The entire world seems to have been transformed into a bucolic paradise by the presence of the goddess. Plus-size models truly belong in Romantic settings such as this, and not in scenes of grim urban decay.
Hearts beat faster as this shot of Whitney's dramatic eyes rivets viewers' attention. Notice that although the makeup is bold, and Whitney's expression wild, the effect is still beautiful, as the ferocity is softened by the model's innate loveliness, feminine styling, and by the natural setting.
The next shot draws even closer to Whitney's face,
as if the cameraman were mesmerized by her green eyes. Notice the appealing hint of vulnerability in Whitney's gaze.
A commercial as artistic as this certainly earns its product placement.
The most beautiful still in the entire commercial shows Whitney sitting along the edge of a stone pond, gazing upon her reflection in a compact. Notice the water lilies reaching out from the pond toward her, as if offering themselves as a natural bouquet, an impromptu floral tribute to her beauty. The majestic trees fill the left side of the frame in a profusion of emerald green. One can hardly imagine a more appealing image, wholly timeless rather than modern, yet created in the present day--as if one spied Aphrodite beautifying herself during a visit to the mortal realm.
A close-up of Whitney's mesmerizing eyes shows the model becoming her own work of art.
Describing Kim Novak's performance in the Hitchcock thriller Vertigo, a reviewer recently wrote:
"With the snowy whiteness of her skin and dreamy, somnambulant way of exhaling her role, she gives a beautiful performance, all soft and bosomy . . ."
A more apt description of Whitney's appearance in this commercial, and especially in this particular still, could hardly be found.
One final close-up casts a loving glance at Whitney's eyes, and pretty smile.
Whitney's CoverGirl series has made an extraordinary aesthetic statement. These commercials offer the fashion world a template to follow in charting a wonderful new course, in which naturally-beautiful models and gorgeous locations harmonize in ideal depictions of timeless beauty.

I absolutely agree that these commercials create an idyllic dream-like environment. When you watch them, you can't help but think, "I want to live there," in that world. People in fashion keep talking about how they want to create "aspirational fantasy" with their pictures -- well, unlike most of what the fashion industry produces, these commercials actually succeed in doing that. It's a beautiful fantasy, with a beautiful model.
I've actually much preferred Whitney's "lifestyle" commercials to the ones that have shown her on various shoots and castings. It's been said before, but it bears repeating: this commercial would have made a great magazine photoshoot (same settings, clothing, same look for Whitney).
By the way, besides an online portfolio, Elite New York now also has a "Whitney channel." Its first news item mentions a promotion that she will be doing for Fashion Bug:
