Default Carisal: F/W 2009


Time and again, Spain has upstaged other continental plus-size labels by producing some of the most size-celebratory images in the European industry. Perhaps this aesthetic proficiency is a legacy of the country's aristocratic and Catholic traditions. Perhaps it is due to the proximity of the Prado, the world's greatest painting gallery, which houses countless masterworks by Titian and Rubens. But for whatever reason, the Iberian peninsula has proven to be a wellspring of stunning imagery.

The latest example of the Spanish affinity for full-figured beauty is the Fall/Winter 2009 campaign from Carisal Fashion. We have applauded the Carisal promotions on numerous occasions, mostly because of the attractiveness of the company's previous model, Leticia Herrero, who used to possess the most gorgeous legs of any plus-size goddess, until the tragically lost weight.

Although said model does not appear in the company's current promotion, Carisal has, astonishingly, discovered a new talent who is even more beautiful, even fuller-figured, and even closer to the timeless ideal.

Indeed, this new star is quite a discovery for Carisal. We have seldom seen a model who so successfully combines a visibly full-figured look with such high-fashion posing techniques. She verily personifies opulence, and exhibits an alluringly spoiled and appetitive nature, making her images thrilling to view.

We begin with a series of photos exhibiting Carisal's most elegant clothing. In the first picture, notice the drama of the model's pose. She has positioned herself against the wall in a manner that is seemingly defensive, yet actually inviting. Her blonde tresses shimmer in the sunlight. Her expression communicates quiet hunger. Notice how the sash gently wraps around her midsection, not pressing too closely, suggesting the generous expanse of the waist beneath. The model's legs are full and shapely.

This striking blue dress shows off the model's bare neck and shoulder areas, which appear pillowy soft. Her clavicle is submerged in flesh--flesh that is dazzling in its fairness. The dress is loose at the waist, offering comfort at the model's fullest area. The way in which she plays with her tresses is most seductive.

The model's leaned-back pose in this image displays the curves of her sumptuous waist. Her expression is a shade more innocent and vulnerable here. Her tresses are gilded by the sun.

The next photograph captures a wonderful effect as a fountain sprays behind her, its water glistening in the afternoon light, bathing her in a shimmering glow. Her demeanour is chic and sophisticated. The dress, defined just below the bust but otherwise loose, again intimates a generous midsection.

The Carisal line offers a number of black-dress evening options, all of which are modelled expertly by our blonde goddess. Although the model's waist looks somewhat compressed here, the dress is elegant, and her expression is as chic as the clothing.

The next picture is more alluring because the dress exhibits a greater expanse of the model's figure, and particularly displays her arms, which look luscious and full. The way in which her soft hair delicately touches her bare skin is intoxicating.

Here too one senses the untoned roundness of the model's arms, which exhibit an eye-catching dimple at the elbow. This closer view also indicates the fullness of the model's face--a trait that will be seen more clearly in subsequent images.

A final formal-dress image shows the model returning to the captivating pose seen in the first picture. This stance presents the curves of her figure quite dramatically, emphasizing her soft, full bust, and intimating her curvy waist. Her expression shows undisguised want, a passionate appetite that involves the viewer, drawing him toward her--for she clearly desires to be engaged.

As viewers noted in the recent discussion of Mark Fast's designs, the most alluring plus-size fashions of all are knitwear styles. The following images bear out this belief, for Carisal's knit fashions dramatically define the model's lush, full beauty.

Now, at last, her sumptuous shape is undisguised, revealing her to be even more buxom than the formal-dress images suggested, and her waist even fuller. Notice the difference in expression too. Here, she is openly displaying her figure, completely at ease with her swelling curves, aware of just how enticing she is, and assessing the effect that her beauty has upon her quarry. Even her abdomen is generously rounded--yet the goddesses recognizes this as part of her feminine allure.

In this image, artfully constructed to resemble a candid, the model is seemingly caught off-guard. The gesture of donning the gloves is quite feminine and sophisticated, and her expression raw and irresistible in its trace of dark passion. But the viewer's eye draws toward her luscious waist, so seductively defined by the knitted sweater. Her figure transforms an outfit that would, on any other model, be boring, into a captivating look.

Bold, challenging, arresting--these are just some of the adjectives that could describe the model's pose in the following image. The expression is petulant, but the opulent fullness in her face softens the look, making the effect intensely seductive. Notice the sensual curve under the chin. Even more alluring is the way in which the model's lavish waist presses open the sweater between the buttons. Yet she poses confidently, unconcerned, secure in the knowledge that the fullness of her figure only makes her more desirable.

In a demonstration of her versatility, the model changes demanour entirely in the following image, becoming sweet and pretty--and fuller and more alluring than ever. The unconstrained swell of her waist is intensely seductive. Her heavily-lidded eyes and indolent smile are languorous, the fullness in her face heart-stoppingly sensual. There is a sense of weight to the model's figure in this image that is overwhelmingly alluring.

While the knitwear images may show the model in the most attractive manner possible, owing to how those garments define her figure, Carisal also offers a series of items that are more intentionally seductive, and here the model's prodigious posing ability is unleashed.

Observe how this split-sleeve top dramatically showcases her soft, full arms. Her expression is overtly sensual, the fullness in her face irresistible.

In the full-length, notice again that most desirable of figure features, the swell of the model's abdomen, defined by her fitted denim. Far from being a figure "flaw," the model presents this as yet another one of her body's sinful curves. Notice too the way in which her waist presses against the fabric of the top.

In what may be the most dramatic image in the entire campaign, the model appears to turn quickly, making her golden curls flow freely, and allowing her jacket to fly open and reveal the sumptuous charms beneath--defined by a closely fitted top. The top is cut daringly low, and the expression in the models face is rapacious and languishing--a look of undisguised craving that makes her more desirable than in any other photo.

Bolder she cannot be, therefore in the next image the model adopts a pose that is somewhat quieter, but no less provocative, presenting herself in a way that the viewer cannot resist. She eyes her quarry with the knowing look of someone who is well aware of the hypnotic effect of her ornate charms. The halter cut of the top is designed for maximum attractiveness, and capitalizes on the model's buxom curves. Note the effective hand placement--one hand stroking her own tresses, the other seemingly preparing to remove her bolero, thus revealing her arms.

Sometimes, a more casual glance can be just as intoxicating as an appetitive look. This image effectively displays the well-fed fullness of the model's face. The curve under her chin appears sumptuous and decadent. Her fair features, with a ruddy glow at the cheeks, remind the viewer of a ripe peach. She has the robust look that people often mistakenly attribute to pregnancy, but which is in fact a characteristic that goddesses acquire whenever they gain weight. Her coy expression suggests the model's pleasure in her own appearance--an alluring quality. The top displays a dizzying expanse of her person.

In addition to its elegant dresses, as presented first in this thread, Carisal also provides many expensive looks that straddle the line between daywear and evening wear--stylish pieces that are a shade above casual fare. These too are seductive ensembles, though--or at the very least, the model's delicious figure makes them so.

For example, this top draws attention to her voluptuous curves, which are comfortably positioned rather than over-bound. The hairstyle appears loose and flowing; the model's expression self-satisfied, yet idly appetitive too.

The most stunning of these casual/elegant looks is the following, with the white shirt defining both the model's buxom charms and her seductively swelling waist. Again, she gauges the effect that her beauty has upon the viewer. She clearly relishes the attention that her curves garner, feeding off of the adoration, deriving pleasure from how it satisfies her vanity. It delights her to know that she can eat whatever she wants, and as much as she wants, yet always remain irresistible.

In this sensual image, the model is engaging the viewer directly, seeking his worship immediately, right this instant. Her movements appear slow and graceful, languorous, avoiding any exertion. The alluring curve under her chin is clearly visible, testifying to her seductively well-fed state.

Observe the languishing look in the model's face in this image. Her features appear sensually full. And notice that she is tugging the sweater down, thus pressing the fabric closer to her figure so that her curves are better defined. Her tresses look wilder and more abandoned here, and the deep-V neckline adds further to the seductiveness of the look. She is only half-disguising her rampant desire.

Although the model's appetitive looks are most captivating, she also explores a host of different miens in this campaign. Here she seems calm and placid--satisfied (for a brief moment, at least). The top is correspondingly loose, although one still perceives the fullness beneath, at the waist.

In the following picture, the model looks uncommonly relaxed. She still artfully runs her hand through her tresses, through--for she needs, at every moment, to feel the worshipful gaze of admirers' eyes upon her. Notice the dramatic eye makeup, a dark look that plays off against her innately angelic features, emphasized by her golden curls.


Some of the model's most intriguing images are those in which she exhibits petulance, and an appealingly spoiled quality. Although clearly a mature woman, she exhibits the neediness, impatience, and adorable selfishness of a pampered young girl. That quality is evident in this picture,

and even more so in the following image. She is clearly used to getting anything she wants, and becomes disagreeable when she is denied anything, even for a moment (this characteristic prompting her suitors to race to fulfill her every whim).

Another view of the model in the same outfit shows her still displaying a touch of wickedness--perhaps not quite as dark, but no less compelling.

For variety's sake, admirers of this Carisal model may also enjoy seeing her own take on the "ice princess" guise so recently perfected by Justine Legault. Fittingly, given her fuller figure, the Carisal model's approach is rawer and hungrier than Justine's. Whereas Mlle Legault resembled a sweet angel, the Carisal model exhibits a greedy look, the appearance of a goddess of insatiable appetites. The smouldering look in her eyes belies her angelic characteristics, and even through the coat, one perceives her sumptuous waist.

Here, with her lips parted, she seems needier and more vulnerable. She has a steamy look in her eyes--beseeching, imploring--whereas the previous mien was bolder. No one could resist her; no one could deny her anything. The sight of her blonde tresses spilling out of her hat and over her shoulders is mesmerizing.

This head-down pose catches the model in a rare, inwardly reflective moment. Notice how her generous waist presses sensually against the coat's midriff button.

This last series of Carisal images, comprising a "rustic" collection, suggests an intriguing narrative scenario. Imagine the model as some glamorous personage, (say, a film actress,) who, for whatever reason, needs to be hidden from the public eye, or placed in a witness-protection program. She is taken to the countryside, to a remote, rustic location somewhere in the Midwest. At first, she chafes against the curtailed lifestyle, missing the ritz and glamour of her high-society party life.

But over time, she begins to enjoy the freedom of her new existence. Being out of the public eye means that she can finally indulge herself as much as she has always longed to; that she no longer needs to curb her insatiable appetite at all.

She sees her features filling out, and discovers that she is becoming more gorgeous than ever. (Just look at how replete her face appears in this image.)

At first, she dresses in loose tops, but still arranges her hair in her signature, ultra-glamorous, '40s-movie-star fashion.

The country life agrees with her. She develops a heartier appetite, but doesn't mind it. In fact, she finds that this new life of ease, of leisure, agrees with her. Her satisfaction shows in her fuller features and happier demeanour.

She even begins to wear more fitted clothing again, as she comes to appreciate her richer curves. (Notice how her waist swells sensually over her belt in this picture.)

Ultimately, she finds that she loves her new life, and her new physicality. She is bigger than she has ever been, but feels good about it. She sees her filled-out face, and knows that she looks doll-like and adorable; ten years younger, at least. Her waist has become quite generous, but she feels sexy with her newfound curves. She sees the adoring reactions of the men around her, and knows that just the sight of the soft fullness around her neck and shoulder area is enough to drive them wild. This life of ease and pleasure, of uninhibited self-indulgence and constant adoration, is what she has always wanted, but never realized it before. She forgoes her past lifestyle, and chooses to embrace this heartier, more comfortable existence forever.

While Carisal's apparel may not be as youthful as, say, Torrid's, for a European plus-size label is it quite feminine, and some of the pieces are fairly attractive. But what makes the company worthy of praise is the fact that its campaigns feature gorgeous and genuinely full-figured models--especially this season. Not only is Carisal's current "face" lusciously proportioned, but she poses in a chic, expressive manner, exploring a range of emotions, many of them remarkably dark and sensual.

This Carisal campaign provides an example that North American labels should follow, prompting them to desist from using faux-plus models (particularly since "mainstream" publications now use girls that size), and to begin employing genuinely curvaceous goddesses, size 16, 18, or better, to showcase their fashions. North American agencies represent many models that size, models who are even more beautiful than Carisal's new talent (Kelsey Olson, Charlotte Coyle, Katherine Roll, etc.).

This is one of the most exciting and inspiring campaigns I've ever seen. Finally, here's a campaign with a model who LOOKS full-figured, AND is beautiful, AND is posing in a chic, "fashionable" way. I especially love the fact that neither the model nor the photographer tried to hide her curvy waist, but showed it off proudly and comfortably.

I'm sick to death of the industry's use of faux-plus models- a problem which seems to be getting worse, not better. It's high time for the fashion industry to start featuring models like this Carisal goddess, who truly LOOK plus, but who are also professional models, and look sexy and stylish.

And it's not as if the models don't exist. Charlotte Coyle, Kelsey Olson, Katherine Roll, Christina Schmidt, Barbara Brickner and even Kailee O'Sullivan, in her best campaigns, have curvy looks.

The plus-size fashion industry is just as obstinately tone-deaf to the criticism of faux-plus models as the straight-size industry is to the criticism of its waifs. But full-figured women hate the use of faux-plus models. Here's one article that voices this opinion:

I hope other plus-size retailers see this campaign, and acknowledge that they can feature models who ARE curvy, who LOOK curvy, and who are photographed to celebrate their feminine fullness.
