Default Candice: Rubenesque at Addition-Elle

Candice Huffine's name comes up on this forum from time to time. She always seems to be on the cusp of being genuinely full-figured. If she were maybe just one size fuller, she'd be one of the most exciting plus-size models around.

As it is, in some pictures she seems a bit slim, but in others - especially when she shoots for Addition-Elle - she looks quite curvaceous. That's definitely the case in her current AE cover, which caused me to gasp when I saw it.

No question that this is the best picture of Candice's career, and Addition-Elle's all-time finest cover. She looks so luscious here. I can hardly imagine a better intimate-apparel photograph. The pose is Rubenesque, with her gathering motion emphasizing her voluptuousness. Her arm is fairly full, and has a trace of a dimple at the elbow. The most size-positive feature is the curve at her waist, just visible at the bottom edge of the photograph. Bavo to AE for leaving that in.

Beautiful dark, wavy tresses, and an appealingly soft expression. It's a great example of how a picture can be both size-positive and sensual; in fact, sensual because of its size-positive touches. The photographer made the most of Candice's figure, and instead of trying to minimize her proportions, accentuated them.

Not every AE photo is quite at this level, but this one is a masterpiece.

Deeming that Addition-Elle cover "Rubenesque" is right on point, because Candice's pose deliberately echoes that of Rubens's beloved young wife and model Hélène Fourment in one of the master's most celebrated works, the Venus in Fur-Coat of 1608.

The imitation of the painting is close, but not slavish, which is the best way to mine works of art for inspiration. Particularly distinctive in both is the "gathering" motion of the right arm, which emphasizes the bust and amplifies each model's voluptuousness. Likewise, observe how Candice crooks her left arm below the other. In Rubens's painting, a similar hand placement has a practical as well as decorative purpose, allowing the goddess to hold her fur-coat in place, but in the Addition-Elle image, it is strictly an aesthetic gesture, deployed to relate the photograph to the source painting. Although Candice is merely on the cusp of being full-figured, she does possess the slight trace of a dimple at the elbow, as does Rubens's Venus. The hairstyles differ, of course, and the gazes vary somewhat, but all in all, Addition-Elle has created a fine Rubens homage.

As we have frequently suggested, the artworks of the Western tradition provide exemplary source material on which modern photographers can draw when looking for ways to photograph plus-size models, because the Old Masters made it their life's mission to celebrate full-figured feminine beauty. Far better for photographers to echo Classical art than to mimic straight-size-model photography, which is concerned with an opposing aesthetic of "edginess" and "angles," tailored for a wholly different body type.

It is a pity that Candice isn't fuller-figured. Some of her earliest test images, when she was still with Wilhelmina, were quite attractive, such as this '50s-themed photograph showing the model in a pretty skirt,

as well as the following interesting picture. We generally dislike fishnets, but Candice looks so youthfully girlish here, so doll-like, with her round face, sweet expression, and coy pose, that the vixenish fishnets and heels provide interesting counterpoint to her seeming innocence.

After moving to Ford, Candice began creating more overtly alluring tests, such as this mysterious, darkly sensual photo.

Ask yourself, what makes the following swimwear study so effective? The wild hairstyle, of course--those dramatically windblown dark tresses falling over one eye, which endow the image with an almost epic quality.

Candice achieves a completely different effect in the next picture, for which she adopts a relaxed, playful mien. Here, it is the tropical setting, with that Hawaiian-style grass-thatched hut, that makes the photograph particularly beautiful, and gives it an idyllic mood. The wardrobe colours contrast nicely.

While most of Candice's print work doesn't show her looking full-figured enough to advance size-celebration, this Ulla Popken image suggests an attractively soft waist.

At 5'11, it would be wonderful to see Candice blossom into a size 16, at which point she would look indisputably full-figured in every image. At a 12/14, much of of her work is less demonstrably plus-size than fans prefer. However, she is quite attractive, and as the Addition-Elle masterpiece shows, capable of creating quite memorable work.

I've always thought that Candice is a stunning girl, but she's also a very good model. Her look is versatile, she's a skilled poser and her confidence is unwavering. The fact that she looks fuller-figured in this photo makes her an even more effective weapon in the fight for size celebration.
