Default Voluptuous beauty

A few years ago, when we interviewed Angela Samuels, the co-owner of Canada's "Voluptuous" clothing chain, we were impressed by her commitment to offering body-conscious clothing for full-figured girls.

In occasional correspondence in subsequent years, Ms. Samuels lamented the dearth of professional plus-size models who were young, alluring, and visibly full-figured. Virtually all curvaceous women join her in that lament, which has been the public's most enduring frustration with the plus-size fashion industry.

Thus, the Winter 2009 promotion for Voluptuous comes as a refreshing example of a campaign that gets it right. Somewhere, somehow, Voluptuous found a model who is attractive and genuinely plus-size, and featured her in its images.

Figure-wise, this girl represents what plus-size models should look like. Observe the visible roundness of the arms and legs. Her limbs are sensually generous, yet free of any unattractive muscle "tone." Rather, their gorgeous shape is due to natural fullness. Notice the effective pose here, with the leg placed forward, expressing the model's pride in her sumptuously proportioned physique.

What helps make the images so size-celebratory is the fact that the Voluptuous designs are stylishly abbreviated. By employing the "body-as-fashion-accessory" principle, the apparel frames the model's luscious fullness, allowing her seductive body shape to be the centre of attention (as it should be).

The styling is contemporary, but not overly urban, and is still governed by femininity. The extravagant accessories and wild hairstyle add a touch of daring to the looks.

But ultimately, it is the model's well-fed figure that is the prime component in the success of these images. Notice how this top attractively exhibits her decolletage.

Even the model's facial features are rather comely, tending towards roundness rather than an androgynous, oval look. Her poses and expressions are effective. This one-shoulder top is very appealing on her figure, and although the pants might not be to everyone's taste, they do seductively define the robust shape of her legs.

Even in more conservative clothing, the model's proportions give the outfits considerable allure. Here, it is the visible fullness of her thighs, over which the slacks fit like a second skin, which makes the ensemble eye-catching, as does the suggestion of a curvy waist.

All in all, this is a fine campaign, and a solid debut for an appealing model. Voluptuous clearly believes in plus-size beauty, as evidenced both by its apparel and by the. . .well, by the voluptuousness of the model on whom they display it.

All plus-size retailers should take a cue from Voluptuous when determining the size of models whom they use for their promotions.

With all of the images of skinnier plus-size models, it's a real pleasure to see a curvier girl. I wish all full-figured models had a figure as generous as hers. And I'm glad that there's a company that isn't afraid to display its fashions on a shapelier model, especially since the fashions really show off her figure.
