Default ''Growing confidence among larger teens''

Here's a good 3-pg. article about junior plus-size fashions. It has a cute title: "A+ for plus-size teens"

http://www.cleveland.com/living/pla...5380.xml&coll=2

It doesn't present any information that's radically new, but that's kind of encouraging too. Despite all of the anti-plus propaganda that's out there, positive stories like these are showing up on a regular basis as well. We need more!

Here are a couple of the best excerpts:

Today, they can buy up-to-date fashions such as camisole tops, miniskirts and rhinestone-embossed jeans.

"It's the first time they can think about looking as good as everyone else," Van Cleave said.

There's opportunity for growth in the market, Avila said. "We definitely know that."

That realization, coupled with a growing confidence among larger teens about their bodies, has created a demand for stylish clothes in big sizes, said Michael Wood, vice president of Teenage Research Unlimited in Northbrook, Ill.

"These girls are not shying away from fashionable clothes -- maybe even sexy clothes," Wood said. "There's opportunity to fill this niche. It's starting to catch on."

It is crucial for positive messages such as this to be disseminated as widely as possible. Part of the reason why plus-size beauty has been suppressed for so long is because of the negative impression of full-figured teens that weight-loss profiteers continue to spread--i.e., that they resent their generous curves.

This is a complete myth, of course, but as long as the dominant perception of generously-proportioned girls is that they do not adore their figures, the media will refuse to present them in more favourable ways.

But in actuality, curvaceous vixens are gaining confidence steadily, due in large measure to the gradual emergence of positive role models, such as Christina Schmidt. In both her statements, and in her images, she reflects the true body-confidence that her generation possesses. Thank goodness that Torrid is helping to spread this vital message of body love.

The absolute perfection that is Christina Schmidt (Torrid, Winter 2005):
