Default Melissa King: Penningtons fall 2011

Amidst the many North American plus-size labels which produce campaigns with disappointingly faux-plus models, Penningtons has always stood out as a rare example of a company that features gorgeous and genuinely full-figured girls in its promotions. This season is no exception, with the latest promo starring size-18 stunner Melissa King.

The new campaign doesn't have quite the drama of the spring/summer shoot, which had a unique desert setting, but it's still outdoors, and the images look fantastic.

Penningtons has launched the campaign with a splash - a glossy look book.

The most size-positive and exciting image of the look book is definitely this fabulous profile view of Melissa, which celebrates her buxom contours and abundant reverse-view curves. This is true size celebration, an image of a grown-up woman who knows that her well-fed size-18 body is highly alluring. Even in a professional outfit, she is proud to show it off.

Melissa looks absolutely gorgeous in this print dress, which is very flattering at the bust.

She looks very comfortable and attractive in this generous sweater.

Brightening the image shows how it celebrates her womanly hips, making her appear eminently huggable.

Looking youthful and pretty in this top.

Melissa has always been a fantastic denim model, and this picture shows why. She has appealingly generous hips, but she also has fullness at the waist. The result is a very natural-looking physique, very believable, with sexy curves, but none of the unpleasantly constrained sensation that a model generates when her waist is too narrow. The ideal plus-size body doesn't ask, "Full hips or full waist?" but announces "Full hips and full waist." And the Penningtons fit is fantastic, closely embracing her figure and defining it in all of its womanly beauty.

An attractive pair of casual outfits.

A classy jewellery promotion.

Penningtons is a Canadian retailer, so of course, the company is already exhibiting its cold-temperature clothing. Melissa looks very cozy in this outfit.

And finally, although "activewear" is anathema to plus-size beauty, the photograph itself is lovely, with the sun gilding Melissa's blonde hair in a radiant light.

Another triumph from Melissa and Penningtons, one of the finest model/client pairings in the industry. Thank goodness that at least this one label recognizes that plus-size models should be a size 18 - and beautiful.

Beautiful!

Penningtons clearly recognizes that first image as the standout photo of the campaign, because I just received an e-mail flyer featuring it as the dominant graphic.

The Penningtons site also features Melissa's images on a host of landing pages:

This photo doesn't appear anywhere in the flyer, and can only be found on the Penningtons site:

Two more photos appear as background graphics behind some company text.

The profile image comes up yet again.

Kudos to Penningtons for consistently booking Melissa at a size 18, and for shooting its models in attractive, outdoor locations. It does make a difference, creating more agreeable images that better showcase the clothing.

One of Melissa's most size-positive photos is now on the cover of the Penningtons site. Without exaggerating her pose at all, she displays the generous proportions of her hips.

The same image is cropped to show Melissa alone, to promote her outfit.

How wonderful that there are at least a few North American labels that use genuinely full-figured models in their promotions - Penningtons foremost among them.

Penningtons recently released a new look book that features many more gorgeous images of Melissa.

The cover is especially pretty.

It's so nice to see the company shooting outdoors rather than in a cold studio.

This is the most size-positive image of the campaign. It shows Melissa looking every bit a sumptuous size 18 in tightly fitted denim that defines her womanly curves.

That picture is worth viewing at a larger size. It's an unabashed, unapologetic celebration of a well-fed female body, with generous hips, full thighs, and ideal shapeliness.

Kudos to Penningtons for creating such attractive images and to Melissa for keeping her glorious figure and not diminishing her opulent beauty.

I think Melissa's denim photo will be the most size-positive image of this campaign, but the company also released a lovely cover image the other day that deserves a view. The business with the hair is very pretty.

I can't begin to express how commendable it is that this brand consistently books bigger models and shoots them to illustrate their full curves. Many other labels, both Canadian and American, should follow its lead.
