Default Kristina Yeo: ''Poor But Sexy''

The name of gorgeous Ford Toronto plus-size model Kristina Yeo (38d-36-51), a stunning size 16, has come up on this forum several times in the past, in praise of her lovely test photos. But her most recent editorial appearance propels her to a new level of accomplishment, for it showcases plus-size beauty in a truly irresistible way.

The phrase "poor but sexy"--initially popularized by a mayor of Berlin, who used it to describe the attractions of the impoverished German capital city--provides the title of a new, independent Canadian magazine, which has just published its fourth issue. The Poor But Sexy web site describes the periodical as offering "the best in photography, fine art, essays, interviews, style and much more," and outlines its publishing mission as follows:

Quote:
Developed by Seed9 Photography and Design, Poor But Sexy is a Canadian independent publication created to provide a fresh avenue for artists and marketers to showcase their work through project-based spreads, profiles, stories, and interviews.

Often, such independent-minded projects favour "edgy" visual content and exhibit a postmodern editorial viewpoint. But every once in a while, they set aside their tendencies towards deconstruction and embrace bona fide timeless beauty. V Magazine did so when it published its acclaimed "Curves Ahead" editorial in 2010, featuring plus-size models, and in its new issue, Poor But Sexy likewise embraces a pure beauty aesthetic, celebrating full-figured femininity with two images that are among the most gorgeous and sensual depictions of unrestrained curvaceousness that we have ever seen.

Yes, the magazine's jaw-droppingly seductive cover model is Kristina Yeo, looking particularly luscious. The Poor But Sexy site explains the sheer genius of the conception behind this cover:

Quote:
For the fourth cover of Poor But Sexy, we wanted to bring the va-va-voom, so we chose Ford Model’s stunning Kristina Yeo and did a little Toddlers and Tiaras meets Bridget Bardot. Special thanks goes out to our wonderful crew for the day of Lori-Ann Lazary on hair and makeup and Terri Dacquisto of Plutino Group on styling.

One would be hard pressed to devise a more charming concept for a shoot than the one described above--not in the controversial youth of the participants in the Tiaras program, but the fantastic extravagance of pageant outfits and the innocence of girlhood. This childlike quality plays off of the second influence, Bridget Bardot, whose name is synonymous with youthful voluptuousness.

The blending of these two elements yields the most desirable aesthetic mixture imaginable. The softness of the model's physique, as displayed in her rounded arms and buxom contours, creates a captivating persona of a self-indulgent princess. The bustier showcases the model's voluptuousness in an eye-catching manner. Her fair tresses tumble over her bare shoulders in soft waves of gold. The mask adds a touch of mystery, but Kristina, to her credit, maintains a delicate, vulnerable look, rather than going for a duskier allure, as her gentle prettiness is much more appealing. The luxurious accessories, the ring and the tiara, harmonize with the lavish fullness of the model's figure, creating an overall impression of opulence. Even the model's fingers appear soft, recalling the tradition whereby a gentleman would tenderly kiss the hand of his beloved. Her gesture invites multiple narrative readings: she could be blushing at having received a compliment and is touching her own cheek, which is hotly flushed; or more likely, she is astonished at something that she has seen. This look of naive wonderment only adds to her prettiness.

Incredibly, the back cover is even more beautiful. It reveals the babylike prettiness of her facial features, the youthfulness of which no doubt inspired Poor But Sexy to reference the Tiaras television program. Her golden tresses appear even longer and cascade lazily over her bare shoulders, leading the eye downward toward the bountiful richness of her decolletage. The white bustier is even more appealing than the black outfit, above, as the white colour intimates innocence, even as the model's figure suggests unbridled sensuality. Her arms are round and full, while the ornate accessories, from the golden ring and bracelet to the fascinating crown, harmonize with the sumptuousness of the model's physique.

The crown is an especially fascinating touch, seemingly merging folkloric elements with monarchical jewellery, as if Kristina were the princess of a Tolkienesque fantasy realm, the queen of the Elven race. But perhaps most fetching of all is the model's troubled expression. One longs to soothe her hurt, to assuage whatever pain she is experiencing. In adopting this pose, observe how the model has deftly arranged her fingers, so that they touch her face and arm very gently. Captivatingly, this suggests a consciousness of effect on the part of her persona, as if she were deliberately adopting a wounded self-presentation in order to ensnare the viewer's heart.

Poor But Sexy has achieved wonders with these cover images of lovely Kristina Yeo. The photographs evoke her very essence, the very qualities that plus-size beauty symbolizes in its purest form: soft, feminine, well-fed, voluptuous, self-indulgent, vulnerable, and luxurious.

One only wishes that Kristina had been given a multi-page layout in the issue, with figure shots that would showcase her curves and exhibit the full-length beauty of her ultra-feminine apparel. After all, if a publication is fortunate enough to book a goddess with 51" hips, then it would seem mandatory to celebrate such divine curves.

Bravo to Poor But Sexy for booking such a gorgeous and genuinely full-figured young plus-size model and for presenting her beauty in the most dazzling manner imaginable. And kudos to Kristina for her exquisite work. We hope that these masterpieces will propel her career to a higher level.

Absolutely gorgeous images from a model who will hopefully have a stellar career. It's wonderful to see another genuinely full-figured talent emerging on the scene.

The mask is an interesting touch, adding an element of mystery. The lone precedent that comes to mind is Alexandra Newton's "Cinderella" shoot from a while back, where she was masked for her ball images:

Still, while the mask for the Poor But Sexy cover is very decorative (bringing to mind masquerade scenes from the Phantom of the Opera to Marie Antoinette to a host of other films), I'm glad that the back cover shows Kristina without the mask, just as I'm glad that Alexandra appeared in many photos in her shoot without her Cinderella-at-the-ball disguise. It's a shame to hide the beautiful facial features of such lovely models! Whenever masks are used, they should always be accompanied by an image of the model sans mask, as Poor But Sexy so wisely decided to do.

Default ''Posing with pain''

Kristina is stunning. She has a soft physique and a true plus-size figure at a size 16, but she also has the prettiness of a very young look. It's a perfect combination, and Poor But Sexy took full advantage of her uniquely adorably appearance by dressing her in such playful yet sensual attire.

Kristina's poses, especially her pose for the back cover of the issue, reminded me immediately of a sequence in Cycle 10 of America's Next Top Model- the cycle that Whitney Thompson won, and the only season of ANTM that I ever viewed in full.

In this episode, Tyra schools the girls in runway walking and posing, and she teaches them a posing technique that she calls "posing with pain." She demonstrates how employing the mannerisms that one might adopt if one were in pain can yield surprisingly photogenic results. The "posing with pain" sequence begins at 1:04 in this video:

I think Kristina availed herself of this technique for her Poor But Sexy shoot, and the results are quite beautiful.

Despite the commonly held belief that lovely Kristina Yeo exclusively appears on the front and back covers of Poor But Sexy's latest issue, aficionados who actually purchase the magazine are treated to one more image of the model within the body of the publication itself--a small but lovely photograph on the credits page:

It shows Kristina in yet another decorative mask that appears to have come straight from a ball at the Paris Opéra. Even through the mesh, one sees that the model's eyes are attractively downcast, more in dolour than in modesty. This exquisite tinge of melancholy adds a rich emotional note to the image, enhancing the model's beauty, for whereas one expects a soft, golden-hair angel to exude sunshine and light, the idea of her experiencing distress immediately involves the viewer, stirring in him a yearning to comfort the fair beauty and ease her dejection. Small as the image is, it sensually bares the soft fullness of her neck and shoulder area, for which the only raiment is the golden profusion of her opulent tresses.

The credits graphic promises a full crew listing on p.144, which reads as follows:

Quote:
Front Cover Designer Credits:
Mask and Ring: Pam Chorley's Fashion Crimes
Headpiece: stylist's own
Dress: Pam Chorley's Fashion Crimes/fashioncrimes.ca

Back Cover Designer Credits:
Bodice: Rod Philpot's Shkank
Headpiece: stylist's own

Bravo to everyone involved in creating this magical presentation of timeless beauty.

Miss Yeo is now also signed with Muse Models in New York:

http://www.musenyc.com/portfolio.as...elid=562779&a=8

Her measurements as given by Muse are:

44dd-35-49

It's wonderful to see another model with genuinely full-figured proportions being given an opportunity. She is one of the few truly plus-size models with New York representation. I hope she and other curvier models begin finding greater visibility with more clients.

This is still my favourite past image of Kristina, apart from her gorgeous Poor but Sexy covers, which are in a class of their own.

I look forward to her next test shoots and campaigns.

Just for fun, we thought that we would share a behind-the-scenes photo from the shoot that produced these unforgettable covers. Courtesy of the model herself, here is a snapshot that Kristina took while she was being made up. She already wears the fantastic headpiece that the stylist provided, which has elements both organic and opulent. One imagines that a Druid queen, or a princess in the time of Classical Antiquity, might have worn a crown of this nature. It suits Miss Yeo's fair beauty especially well. She adopts an adorable smile.

Note the abbreviated black outfits on the clothes rack in the background. One wonders if Kristina wore any of these seductive items for the shoot. Alas, given that the covers strictly featured headshots of the model, we will never know. But given that the published images were nevertheless so stunningly size-positive--especially the back cover, which featured Miss Yeo in the crown shown above--we can hardly complain.

This was altogether one of the more successful and attractive instances of a plus-size model being used in a "high" fashion magazine that we have ever seen, and an all-too-rare case where the model was an authentically full-figured size 16. Let us hope that these Poor but Sexy covers inspire more endeavours featuring plus-size models, and guide such projects toward adopting a similarly feminine, pro-curvy aesthetic.
