Default Kailee O'Sullivan: Nordic Beauty


The Muse modelling agency in New York recently added a plus-size board--a fact that will thrill and delight aficionados of timeless beauty no end, because to mark this launch, the agency has released three of the most gorgeous images of Kailee O'Sullivan that fans have ever seen.

These pictures find Miss O'Sullivan presenting her own take on the artistically fulfilling natural ideal testing theme, with Kailee accessing her Northern European heritage. The environment is very Nordic, recalling a Scandinavian setting or the more austere locales of the Canadian Shield. The craggy rocks of the peninsula in the background, the icy water, and the overcast sky present exactly the kind of cold environment that nurtured the fair beauty of which Kailee is a perfect embodiment. Her pale complexion, showing just the barest hint of a flush, is a legacy of a spare climate such as this, where the perpetually cloudy skies protected feminine skin from excessive sun exposure. And yet there is teeming life in this stark environment, as evidenced by the wild grasses that provide Kailee with a soft, natural carpet. Note the tiny yellow wildflowers blossoming by Kailee's feet, as if symbolizing how Kailee herself is a lovely blossom in this unforgiving landscape. Beauty will thrive in such challenging surroundings, and it may even be prettier than the luxuriance found in a cultivated garden, just as a tiny wild strawberry is smaller but has a taste that is far tangier than that of its larger, domesticated cousin. Observe how Kailee's tresses introduce an arresting element of colour into this environment, with a hue just rich enough to dazzle the eye but not so bright that it would intrude into the setting. The model's noble expression and wintry Romantic beauty harmonize perfectly with the Viking locale, evoking the true spirit of the North in all of its austere loveliness.

The second image perfectly emblematizes why luscious, full-figured femininity was the dominant ideal of womanly beauty in Northern Europe throughout the centuries. Consider the cold, merciless grandeur of the location shown in the previous photograph, and now contrast it with the soft voluptuousness of the following image. For Nordic man, living in such a grim, if majestic, environment required a respite, which he found at home, by the hearth, in the fleshy sensuality of his well-fed beloved. In this image, Kailee perfectly epitomizes what a fair Scandinavian beauty might have looked like throughout history, not only in her fair complexion, but even in her ivory sweater, which has a homespun look, as if it has been knitted by hand, as in days of old. The model's white top gives her a quality of purity even as it alluringly, abundantly discloses her buxom curves. She is both virginal and maternal, both angelic and earthy. Even the way in which the photograph dissolves into white at the borders suggests that this is a dream vision, perhaps the last sight that a dying warrior sees in his mind's eye--a vision of his young bride--before he is taken to Valhalla. And yet observe that this is truly a vision of ideal beauty such as conceived in the Old World, for even in this fantasy image, there is no artifice about the model. Rather, she is very physically real, with soft creases in her neck and a whisper of a flush at the cheeks. Kailee is both seductive and nurturing, reconciling the two traditional attributes of ideal womanhood.

For her headshot, Kailee returns to the austere demeanour of the first image in this thread, a proud bearing that, paradoxically, also highlights her almost childlike youth. In this image, Kailee creates the persona of a young girl in a rugged environment who is old beyond her years--not merely in the fact that she has an "old soul," but that life experiences have shown her the grim reality of the world, far before her time. One imagines her as a girl who has grown up in a era of strife, perhaps in a war-torn land. Continuing the narrative of the second image in white, above, this may be the same young beauty after her beloved has perished by the sword of the enemy, leaving her alone in this world. Yet she is undaunted, despite her youth, and is ready to brave whatever other challenges life throws at her, though she will forever carry the memory of her departed love. The arrangement of her tresses perfectly symbolizes her character, for although her hair is excitingly wild and tangled, it naturally forms itself into a raw echo of cascading waves. Once again, the model's beauty is just like the environment around her, a wild flower that has blossomed amid the tundra, and is all the prettier for its unadorned, natural charm.

Bravo to Miss O'Sullivan for creating such vivid, artistic images, so powerfully expressive and richly thematic--among the very finest of her career.

The Norse theme of the photos is fascinating. Being of Irish descent, Kailee personally has a Celtic rather than Germanic heritage, but the beauty that is particular to the women of both ethnic groups is very similar, both having been nurtured in overcast Northern climes. Kailee could successfully personify a fair maiden from either population, as these images demonstrate.

Of course, the Irish and the Vikings have a shared history with much cross-pollination, especially in the middle portions of the Dark Ages, when the Northmen both raided and settled in parts of the Emerald Isle.



A very good article in the Irish Times newspaper, just published today, offers a fascinating and sympathetic account of the Viking influence on Ireland.

Here are a few choice passages, but really, the whole article is worth reading, as it tells of an incredibly exciting time of history and of a brave, noble people, whose fiery blood still flows in the veins of many of us, their descendants. The quoted verse captures the spirit of Kailee's images.

Complaining about the bad weather is a favourite Irish pastime. But in the early ninth century, an Irish monk wrote a short poem giving thanks for a stormy night. It reads, in Proinsias Mac Cana’s translation,
Bitter is the wind tonight,
It tosses the sea’s white tresses;
I do not fear the fierce warriors of Norway,
Who only travel the quiet seas.
Cold gales were a lot more fun than Vikings.

Or, to look at it from the other side, a Norse saga describes the pattern of life of one Svein Asleifarson, a Viking settler on the Orkney Islands: “In the spring, he had more than enough to occupy him, with a great deal of seed to sow . . . Then when the job was done, he would go off plundering in the Hebrides and in Ireland on what he called his ‘spring trip’...

One man’s terror was another’s trip.

The explosion of raiders, traders and colonists out of Scandinavia in the eighth and ninth centuries is one of the most extraordinary phenomena in European history. Its influence stretched, at one point or another, to North America and Greenland, south as far as north Africa, Byzantium and Baghdad and as far east as Russia, whose very name derives from the local name for the Swedish traders and colonists, the Rús.

In this, the Russians are not alone. In the forms we now use, the names Ireland, Munster, Leinster and Ulster are of Scandinavian origin. It is arguable that the Vikings transformed Ireland more radically than any other set of invaders. They brought, among other things, cities, money and serious military technology. They posed a profound challenge to Irish society, which had to change profoundly in response.

The Scandinavians functioned equally well as merchants, colonists, farmers, pirates and raiders. They had both the technological and organisational means to project themselves into distant societies. The longship was a new invention, developed only in the eighth century. It is not accidental that the Vikings began to expand aggressively thereafter: they did it because, now, they could.

The longship was the spacecraft of its day, propelling adventurers across vast and hitherto unimaginable distances. In one raid in 858, a group sailed from Scandinavia to the coast of Spain, into the Mediterranean, on to Italy, up the River Rhône, raiding all the way, and then back home.

The ships had enough give not to be torn apart by strong waves and were able to traverse both the high seas and inland river systems. (It was through the great rivers of Poland and Russia that the Swedes gained access to the Black Sea, Byzantium and the Arab world.) Their weapons, especially the iron swords they adapted from the Franks, were fearsome.

On their own, these technologies would have had limited impact. The Vikings needed systems for passing on information about geography and sources of wealth. They needed the capacity to band together in flexible, often temporary alliances. They needed a culture that balanced a strong individual or family ethic with cults of loyalty, heroism and unity. One Frankish source refers to Viking companies overwintering on the River Seine as sodalities, or brotherhoods. Somehow, the Vikings were able to combine an adventurous, even reckless, spirit with a capacity for co-operation.

By 807, Vikings were even turning up on the west coast, burning Inishmurray, off Sligo, and Roscam, in Galway Bay. By 821, they are recorded as capturing slaves: a large party of Irish women were kidnapped from Howth.

These incursions were not unopposed, and they were not always successful. One Viking party was routed in Kerry in 812, and in the same year a victory by the Irish over “the Northmen” was considered significant enough to be recorded at the court of Charlemagne, the Frankish emperor. The first named Viking in Ireland, Saxolb, described as “leader of the foreigners”, was killed in battle.

The Vikings also changed the map of Ireland in ways that had long-term consequences for the natives.

The change can be symbolised by the shift in the centre of gravity from Tara to Dublin. The old Ireland looked, geographically as well as psychologically, inwards. It was the Vikings who developed not just towns but coastal towns: Dublin, Wexford, Cork, Limerick and Waterford.

What made them such prodigious founders of coastal towns in Ireland was the simple fact that they were unable to carve out large swathes of rural territory. They needed their fortified strongholds with quick access to the sea.

Yet, particularly as Irish power began to recover from the initial shock, native kings saw the value of this new way of life. They intermarried with the strangers and sucked them into their own quarrels and alliances. The Vikings brought with them a more developed commercial culture than Ireland had known: among the words that entered Irish from Old Norse is margad, market.

The passages in the article about the clashes between the Irish and the Vikings, and how Irish women were sometimes taken in battle, gives a historical background to Kailee's new shoot. In these images, she could either personify one of the Irish women whose village was set upon, or the beloved of a Viking warrior waiting for her hero to return from far-distant battle. Her headshot has a haunted look, but her white-sweater photo is very warm and promises coziness to ward off the bitter chill. She might even represent both: an Irish girl captured on a raid, with whom the Viking warrior falls in love and makes of her his bride.

Muse has now updated Kailee's portfolio with a number of extra images. I find this picture especially striking. Her complexion is remarkably fair and wintry, while the scarf blowing in the breeze is a beautiful touch of feminine colour in what is otherwise an image with a muted colour palette. The rocky ground maintains the Nordic quality of the previous images, still suggesting a flinty Scandinavian land, or the cold Canadian North.



I love the drama of Kailee's tresses blowing in the wind. It reminds me of the initial images of Éowyn in The Lord of the Rings, when she gazes across the plains from the hilltop of Edoras, and the breeze catches her hair. Kailee's expression is vulnerable, but there's also a profound emotion in her eyes, like the look of a young girl who has endured travail but retained her fresh innocence and virtue. The delicacy of the sheer fabric of her dress echoes the feminine fragility of the model's features. Yet her buxom curves, which the dress indicates, give her a robust physicality, for all of the fragile quality that she possesses.



This picture, on the other hand, is vivid and arresting. Kailee's eyes bore into the very soul. Even in black and white, you can feel their icy blue illumination. Her face is beautifully round and doll-like, but the passion that she transmits via her mesmerizing eyes humbles the viewer and makes him feel enthralled. This is an amazing example of how a model can convey potency in a feminine way, captivating but without aggression. Her thick, luxuriant tresses give her impact of a lioness.

This test shoot from Kailee produced some of the most remarkable images of the year. The contrast between Kailee's fleshy, earthy beauty in these photos and her angelic appearance in her IGIGI campaign is remarkable. Both shoots have this in common, though: they showcase Miss O'Sullivan's astounding loveliness in an unforgettable manner.

We are particularly pleased to have shared the original versions of the previous photos. We have since seen the headshot in the top post in this thread endure spectacularly unnecessary photoshopping and colour manipulation, so it is a pleasure to have preserved its original, unaltered appearance, which marvellously displays Miss O'Sullivan's natural beauty.

Kailee's agency, Muse Models, has since released several more photographs from this shoot, masterpieces of sensuality that are well worth sharing. The first image finds her seductively reposing upon a rocky ledge so ancient that it has been worn smooth by the water pounding against it during stormy weather. At the moment, however, the sea is tranquil, yet Kailee's distant, yearning expression gives the image an epic quality. Her skirt is even more folkloric and organic-looking than her top and sweater. The entire outfit appears to date from a past century, but it is wholly believable as clothing, not costume; one senses that this is genuinely what a gorgeous woman in a rustic community would have worn in a bygone era, and it is every bit as naturally beautiful today. The fact that the model's feet are bare adds to the bucolic quality of the ensemble, the sense of freedom, the mixture of loveliness and practicality. The sweeping lines of the skirt harmonize with the curves of the model's body, the waviness of her tresses, and even the contours in the pattern of the rock upon which she reposes.

A closer view shows how this alluring top highlights the model's voluptuous richness. Her fair complexion has a rosy glow. This is a femininity that is not delicate, but hale and robust. The personal that Kailee creates is that of a well-fed goddess who loves indulging in hearty fare, who comes from a long lineage of noble Irish or Nordic peasantry or village-dwellers who were close to the land and partook of its bounty. She appears young, yet very womanly, in a way that is also characteristic of a past era, when girls would marry and begin families even in their own youth. Her gaze is hauntingly alluring, majestic yet feminine.

The next image is a slight variation on a photograph that was posted earlier, but it is well worth viewing once more, in a version where the mist rising from the water has subsided somewhat, giving the model a less ethereal, more physical quality. Her expression in this picture is softer, gentler, more vulnerable, while her blouse reveals a more generous view of her décolletage. Her gaze is inward-looking, yet one sense that she is conscious of her display, that she knowingly discloses a heady view of her buxom curves.

Drawing in closer allows a tantalizing glimpse of the model's bustier, an intimacy that she has generously permitted the viewer as a gesture of trust. The visible fleshiness at the model's neck area is as sensual as her abundant voluptuousness. The intoxicating vulnerability that she exhibits belies the security that she feels in exhibiting her well-fed beauty, as if, in a troubled moment, the model takes solace in the fervent worship and passionate ardour that she knows a disclosure of her sumptuous fullness will enflame.

The third new release is a tad less entrancing than the previous two photographs, yet still possesses a hypnotic power. Each of these images has a dreamlike quality, with the mist rising off the water, even as the model herself appears very physically real, very fleshy and authentic. There is an alluring weight to Kailee's appearance in these images that is not always present in her photographs. Yet for all of her full-bodied robustness, she still conveys a trace of neediness which is beguiling, an appetitive desire that one can palpably sense about her, an insatiable hunger for more. The dramatic sweep of her tresses, and her gaze--filled as it is with nameless desire--give the image a compelling narrative.

Kailee's images have ever been able to stir the emotions in a way that few other models can approach, and this series shows her in fine form. It may be the most captivating test that she has ever created (just as her unpublished Modern Bride layout remains the most gorgeous editorial work of her career). She was, and remains, the most romantic of plus-size models, and an utterly unique beauty and talent.
