The Judgment of Paris would like to wish all of our readers a very happy New Year, and all the best in 2012.
In 2011, the schism between the minus-size fashion establishment and the full-figured industry became greater than ever--all to plus-size fashion's benefit. As the curve-o-phobic "mainstream" became ever-more marginal, taken androgyny to an absurdly literal extent and promoting emaciation as never before, the plus-size industry created more images of beauty than in any prior year.
Yes, many clients still circumscribed their appeal by resorting to faux-plus fraudulence, but the successes were unprecedented.
The 2011 incarnation of Full Figured Fashion Week constituted the greatest runway in the history of fashion--period--sending three Judgment of Paris favourites down the catwalk in an unprecedented display of true plus-size beauty. In a dream come true for her many fans, Kelsey Olson made a triumphant runway debut, wowing the world by exhibiting her Classical physique in Lane Bryant intimate appear. Throughout the year, she continued to dazzle the senses with many campaigns exhibiting timeless beauty.
Sophie Sheppard enjoyed a rise so meteoric that we have never before seen its like. From her very first new image in years, early in 2011, the dazzling 22-year-old was immediately recognized as the loveliest model in the industry, and quickly became one of the most popular as well. Her successes--a print editorial in Vogue Italia, and headlining Curves in Couture, the greatest plus-size runway show Europe has ever known, thanks to her involvement--were thrilling.
Katherine Roll created by far the finest photo shoots of the year, with one astounding triumph following another. Styling her own shoots, the best of which were set in gorgeous natural settings that harmonized with her own rich beauty, she showcased her curvaceous size-18 figure in the chicest, most glamorous manner imaginable. If one were to bind all of her 2011 tests into a single print publication, it would constitute the finest plus-size fashion magazine ever printed.
Mayara Russi blossomed into a size 22, becoming more gorgeous than ever, and creating the most size-positive campaigns in the world, with astoundingly beautiful and celebratory shoots for Duloren, Glamur Fashion, and a host of other Brazilian clients. Furthermore, she headlined both of the year's incarnations of Fashion Weekend Plus Size (the Brazilian equivalent of FFFWeek), making it the most pro-curvy runway show in the world. Her KauÍ Modas videos and campaigns were exceptional triumphs.
An increasing number of mainstream companies, such as Deb Shops and Belk, embraced true plus-size models and published campaigns featuring size-18 stunners such as Lindsey Garbelman. Even labels such as Evans improved their booking policies, featuring Judgment of Paris Favourites such as Kailee O'Sullivan and Justine Legault.
While the plus-size industry continues to be limited by many clients' unfortunate use of faux-plus models, change could be in the air. More North American brands than ever before are following Brazil's lead and booking gorgeous and genuinely full-figured goddesses.
Let us hope that in 2012, these promising developments continue and expand, and the plus-size industry establishes itself as a more wholesome, beautiful, pro-curvy alternative to the misbegotten mnus-size industry, which drifts ever further away from the tastes and desires of the general public.
