Default ''Curvy, fuller legs'' more attractive (study)

This survey may be a standard bit of celebrity fluff, but as the results are emphatically size-positive, it's probably worth a mention.

A new study has confirmed, yet again, that men (and women, in this case) find celebrities with fuller figures more attractive than size 0s. This study focussed on legs in particular (or "pins", as per British slang), so here's good reason for plus-size women with curvier legs to be confident about having limbs that don't look like matchsticks, but actually look round and full.

New Study Reveals Brits Prefer Curves to 'Size Zero'

LONDON, December 27 / -- A new study...reveals that British men and women prefer the shapely and curvaceous figures of Beyonce Knowles and Kate Winslet to the size zero frames of Kate Moss and Kiera Knightly.

The study - which concealed the faces of 50 female celebrities and asked 500 men and women to vote for their favourite celebrity legs -reveals that 21% of men prefer superstar Beyonce's shapely pins, while 29% of women polled British beauty Kate Winslet as their number one.

Strictly Come Dancing Star, Emma Bunton and The Holiday actress Kate Winslet took second and third place for the UK's male population with 17% and 15% of the votes respectively. Surprisingly, highly paid fashion icon Kate Moss only received 1% of men's votes for best legs, despite being well known for her model pins!

It's reassuring to know that when it comes to body types, men and women have very similar ideas of what's sexy and what's not. The majority of UK ladies would like to have Kate Winslet's legs with Emma Bunton's only slightly behind in second place with 16%. Beyonce takes third place with 15%of women envious of her legs. An expected favourite, Julia Roberts famous for those Pretty Women legs, only received 3% of the vote from women and fell into eighth place.

...Dr Stephanie Goodwin explains; "These findings are reassuring in that they support the traditional theory of attraction. Sexual theorists have shown that curvy women exude a natural confidence, making them very attractive to the opposite sex - but what's encouraging is that in the day of the 'size zero' this appreciation of a fuller figure also extends to females."

So it's official, curvy, fuller legs mean sexy legs...

"Surprisingly"? Not at all. The only reason why celebrities with shrivelled figures and stick-thin limbs, like Moss and most of the Hollywood A-list, are regarded as attractive is because the media insists that they are. Human instinct is to follow what is perceived to be the majority opinion (even if it isn't the majority opinion at all, but is merely presented as such, by the entertainment press).

How telling that in this case, when the celebrities' faces were obscured, and the survey's participants appraised their appearance objectively, the underweight models and actresses were regarded as unattractive, while the fuller-figured celebrities were judged to have more appealing figures. This reveals the difference between the artificial modern standard and true, timeless beauty. The former is merely a media hoax, while the latter is genuine.

If Kate Moss were seen in the street by passers-by who didn't recognize her, and appraised her as an ordinary person, they would consider her underweight and unattractive. By contrast, if they passed, say, Shannon Marie in the street, they would immediately be awestruck by her beauty, and would deem her the loveliest women whom they had ever seen, regardless of whether they knew that she was a plus-size model or not.

As for legs per se, it is not at all surprising that men and women find naturally shapely, fuller female legs more attractive. It is also worth remembering what Nigella Lawson noted about her legs, in an article that was recently posted on this forum:

"I always know when a man loves me, if he loves my legs. Not muscular. Wide knees. I donít have a muscle anywhere on my body. Not anywhere."

It is the soft, curvaceous shape that feminine legs acquire through natural fullness, not through gym torture, that creates the most appealing look.

This identifies yet another aesthetic advantage that plus-size models have over their underweight rivals.
