I think it's vital to understand that the environment a girl grows up in doesn't have to be overtly negative to give her the kind of conditioning that could lead to an eating disorder. Mixed messages, or subtly undermining attitudes, can be very confusing, and just as destructive. Anything less than a genuinely positive attitude has the potential to be harmful.

And family pressures can be so devastating. I remember reading that growing up, one of Emme's parents made terrible remarks about her weight, and that this inflicted severe damange on sense of self. But it's fortunate that the victim's family in this article shared their story. Perhaps it will warns other families about the dangers of weight loss.
