It is our great pleasure to announce that everyone's favourite young actress, Christina Schmidt, has been nominated for a Best Supporting Actress award for her performance on Degrassi: The Next Generation.
Now in its 26th year, the Young Artist Awards (www.youngartistawards.org) are the junior equivalent of the Oscars, and the first award show for performers under the age of 18 in television, motion pictures, theater and music. It has recognized the work of some of the brightest young stars in the Hollywood firmament over the years. This year's awards ceremony and banquet will take place April 30th, in (where else?) Los Angeles, California.
Founded by a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (which runs the Golden Globes), this awards organization has substance as well as style. As the official site notes, it uses its profits to operate "a scholarship fund for physically and/or financially challenged young artists, who, without this assistance, would find it difficult to pursue their dream of a career in the performing arts"--an activity for which we commend them most enthusiastically.
In our interview with Christina, we were terribly impressed by her commitment to the acting profession, and by the subtlety and depth of insight that she brought to the role of plus-size model Terri, on Degrassi. It is tremendously gratifying to see this dazzling young starlet getting the recognition she so richly deserves for her craft.
Let us hope that she wins this award, and helps show the world that plus-size actresses are every bit as talented (and certainly as gorgeous) as the silver-screen goddesses of yore.
