Usually, we make it a point to avoid politically-charged and incendiary topics on this forum, simply because people's political allegiances make civil discussions about such topics impossible. And more importantly, size celebration is an essential human concern, and is--or should be--beyond politics.

But the article linked below, written by Paul Campos, urgently requires wider attention. It exposes a fact that has suspiciously failed to attract any media coverage, considering how the Schiavo case has entirely dominated the mass media for the past several weeks.

In brief, Campos reveals that Terri Schiavo's current condition is directly due to the consequences of an eating disorder, resulting from Ms. Schiavo's desire to lose weight.

The points that Mr. Campos makes in the article are sound, and his statement that society's curve-o-phobia has reached the level of "insanity" is completely accurate.

But what is even more troubling is just how calculated this case reveals the current campaign of body-hatred to be.

If the circumstances that led to Schiavo's current state could somehow have been twisted to serve the ends of the weight-loss industries, the media would have been reporting these facts on a daily basis, blaring them in every paper and news program across the country.

But the fact that Schiavo's desperate attempts at weight control caused her predicament has attracted no coverage whatsoever.

And yet instead of vague, baseless suppositions about the supposed downside of being full-figured, here we have a real-life case of a person who has suffered--and may ultimately die--due to the pointless worship of thinness.

And yet, the former attracts limitless press coverage, while the latter is suppressed.

That is as shocking a case of selective censorship on the part of the mass media as we have yet encountered.

Incidentally, the author of the piece, Paul Campos, is well known from a book that he wrote debunking modern weight hysteria. This book will be republished as The Diet Myth (it originally bore a different title) in May of this year. Some have called the book uneven, but Campos's expose of the profiteering motives of the weight-control industry is required reading (at least, for anyone who isn't already aware of how malignant and manipulative this industry really is).
