I think what this experience teaches, above all, is not to trust any of the pronouncements of these so-called experts, ESPECIALLY once they have been filtered through the media.

Even if they have been forced to half-heartedly endorse "our" side now, the damage has been done. It's like a sly lawyer who makes an inflammatory and baseless accusation in court, then withdraws it. The judge may ask that it be "striken from the record," but the seed has been planted in the minds of the jurors.

When this retraction was first announced on CNN, I saw one news achor report it with a thinly-disguised sneer, as if to say, "Yeah, right." Even after this retraction, the bigots out there will still feel liberated by the original smear campaign against plus-size women to justify their prejudiced attitudes, and will still cling to their beliefs.
