Anyone who may have doubted just how deeply ingrained the mass media's resistance to plus-size beauty is, should take note of the following very revealing news item, which involves our friends at Beautiful Magazine.

As noted in a press release issued today, a Canadian advertising agency was initially poised to work with this publication, until it discovered that Beautiful targets full-figured women.

Cortex has published the text of the response that it sent to this agency on the magazine's Web site, at the page linked below.

The situation is typical, but should nevertheless be highly instructive, especially to anyone who has ever believed that plus-size beauty does not need a media of its own. The simple fact is that the mass media, as it exists today, remains deeply biased against curvaceous women, and still seeks to demean it or suppress it at every turn, for reasons that go much deeper than mere financial motives. To achieve anything better than marginal representation, tokenism, or mixed-message presentations, full-figured femininity needs to create alternative media sources governed by individuals who believe wholeheartedly in size celebration, and who demonstrate a thoroughgoing preference for timeless beauty.
