On the one hand, how sad that we have become so accustomed to the mass media's outright hostility towards curvaceous women, that a single, mildly-positive article seems like a godsend.

On the other hand, what a joy to learn that Voluptuous will soon have a nationwide presence! Angela Samuels has been fighting the good fight for many years now, and she possesses a delightfully--and infectiously--positive attitude towards plus-size beauty.

The success of Voluptuous is well deserved, and the very existence of a chain like Angela's does much to shatter the "frumpy" stereotypes about full-figured women that the media tries so desperately to perpetuate. Every time a plus-size girl dons a curve-embracing outfit, it counts as a small but significant act of rebellion against media "norms" (which are anything but "normal"), and another step forward for size celebration.

The Voluptuous Web site ( is still under construction, but in the meantime, here is the link to the interview that we conducted with Ms. Samuels two years ago.
