| Mary Kate is on the cover of the most recent People magazine. On the *very next page* is Valerie's FOTL (I think) ad. The contrast is really quite jarring. Teeny, terrified-of-womanhood Mary Kate next to radiant, confident, womanly Valerie. I know there are no accidents in magazine publishing and I wonder why this juxtaposition of images? The skeptic in me suggests it is a double warning: Don't be too thin, but don't take up too much space either. But Valerie is so beautiful. The image is unreservedly positive (unlike the Vogue images a couple years back). The optimist in me wonders, is it possible that someone at People magazine is interested in subverting the dominant paradigm? Do we dare to hope? |
