The popular press is curretnly filled with reverent obituaries for Richard Avedon, a famous photographer who died earlier today. Avedon's accomplishments were wide-ranging, but his passing has some significance for size celebration, because in the late 1990s, he created a series of Avenue ads with a visibly full-figured Kate Dillon which appeared in Mode magazine, causing an absolute sensation.

Ms. Dillon once revealed that even when she established herself as a plus-size supermodel, some reactionary photographers still refused to shoot her as a plus--even if they had worked with her during her minus-size days. Whatever his other distinctions, Richard Avedon deserves to be remembered fondly for rejecting the size prejudice of his profession, and for offering the fashion world a glimpse of the future.
