As you have all undoubtedly heard, a famous plus-size model will soon be appearing on a weight-loss television show (on a channel which, fortunately, does not air in Canada). There is no easy way to communicate the magnitude of this betrayal, and the only "perspective" that anyone can offer is that this sort of thing has happened before, and will undoubtedly happen again. So be it.

What makes this development all the more tragic, however, is that the model has worked for some of the most size-positive fashion retailers on both sides of the 49th parallel, and has made many positive and inspiring statements in her numerous press interviews--all of which now seem to be nothing more than empty words.

The closer any model draws to the celebrity spotlight, it seems, the greater the chances that she will be co-opted by the media elite. (Remember Sophie Dahl?)

But we certainly don't intend to give this show any free publicity here. Rather, let us focus on the positive contributions of those living goddesses who continue to defy mass-media standards, and offer women a healthier and more natural image of beauty to which to aspire.
