As someone who adored the musical, I saw the film opening night, and was similarly disappointed. Everything in the movie is "curvy"- the architecture, the costumes- so the main actress doesn't fit in this lush environment at all.
I think the film also fails because it demystifies the Phantom. By making him unsympathetic (unlike the musical, which invites audiences to empathize with him), the film becomes little better than a posh "monster movie". The musical was more metaphysical. Only the look of the film does the stage version any justice.
