I think what impressed me most of all was something in that essay you linked. It showed how one city lost a beautiful historic building, and then built an ugly modern hotel on the site. BUT years later, the NEW, modern building was torn down because it was unpopular, and they rebuilt the historic building from scratch. I think that really says something.
