As a young Roman Catholic, I as well as many others my age realize that the passing of “Il Papa,” as he is called in Italian marks the end of an era. Karol Wojtyla, known to the world as John Paul II, was a figurehead unlike any other. He was the first non-Italian Pope in 455 years, and the first Polish pontiff ever to sit on the throne of Saint Peter. He was a beacon of morality, purity, and peace in a world dominated by corruption, greed, war, promiscuousness, and hate.

The octogenarian successor of Saint Peter will be missed greatly by Catholics and non Catholics alike. His death is especially mourned by youth around the world, since he is the only Pope they have ever known.

Whether you are a Catholic or not, it is easy to see the message of peace, love, and hope that John Paul II conveyed to the world during his life.

Rest in Peace, Il Papa
