After we posted the transcript of our telephone interview with Barbara Brickner, a few seasons ago, the question that readers asked us most frequently was, "Well--what does she sound like?"
Their curiosity was understandable. A voice communicates a great deal about the essence of a human being. When we know someone from their images alone, we often speculate about what they would be like to speak with, knowing that this would be a window into their genuine nature.
Well, the fact of the matter is that Barbara Brickner has the voice of . . . an angel.
But don't take our word for it. Listen for yourselves.
We are now pleased to be able to share an original recording performed by Mrs. Brickner, of a song titled: "Shannon's Song: She Is Alive."
Barbara wrote both the music and the lyrics to this song as a tribute for her friend, Shannon Boone Potter, who passed away at age 33 from breast cancer. Mrs. Brickner also informs us:
I will be posting "happenings" for her such as doing several breast cancer walks which will monetarily benefit the Susan Komen Foundation. I have a scholarship that I am running in her name at my sorority at Eastern Washington University (which I was a part of for 21/2 years).
Barbara describes the creation of this song as a very emotional experience, a recording that took place only days after Shannon's passing, and "was done in two takes and with a lot of crying going on!" But the song is powerful and beautiful, and the emotional intensity enhances the immediacy of the performance. Barbara's words are deeply moving, and if the recording demonstrates that the model's childhood dream of becoming a country singer was justified, then the profundity of her lyrics reveals that she also possesses the soul of a poet.
We are sure that Mrs Brickner's late friend would be deeply touched by the tribute that Barbara has given her. Barbara tells us, "My sincere hope is that other people might find some comfort in the words."
We have no doubt that they will.
